BCW Short Comic Book Bin

Just to give you a little background, but I had a flood that destroyed all the cardboard comic book boxes and some comic books that were not bagged and boarded. I lost a ton of manga (these are odd sizes they did not fit in standard comic book bags).

I also lost about half my comic book collection when I moved to Jacksonville, and I’m hopeful that one day my brother will get around to mailing about five boxes of comic books that I really want back in my collection.

Having said that, I am in the market for a storage solution for my comic books. One option that I saw, as Leo described below, are these BCW Short Comic Book Bin. We saw these in real life and it was something I was interested in. It’s not water-proof, but it seems durable enough to survive a flood… and strong enough to stack five or six on top of each other. I also like that they come with their own lids.

Plus, BCW is a name I trust. I have bought many comic book supplies from this company before… so after reading the review below, I’ll probably end up buying one of each color. I already think the price ($30) is a little expensive, especially because I remember only paying $5 for a short cardboard box. Of course, I haven’t bought new ones in a while, I’m sure it’s gone up in prices.

Vu asked me to do a write up on the new BCW short comic box I just bought. When we met up last week, we saw them for sale in a local comic shop and interested both of us. The price was a little hefty at $40 in the shop. On Amazon it was $30.

For decades I have been using IRIS file boxes to store my comics.

They’ve been sturdy and they’re water resistant, which came in handy years ago when I had a house fire. The fire department was able to put out the fire before it completely destroyed my place, but many of my items did suffer from water and smoke damage. Those IRIS bins helped save my collection at the time.

Since the fire I mostly sold off my comics. In the past year I’ve begun to gather a small collection of books, which required a second IRIS container. Even then I began to exceed the capacity of both and had a few more books to get.

The BCW bins advertise as holding 150 books. I was thinking the IRIS bins only held 50, so the hope was I could replace both of the IRIS bins with one BCW. I should have looked closer at the measurements and recounted the books in the IRIS bin. Turns out the BCW doesn’t hold many more books than one IRIS. Still, it should be enough where I only need one IRIS and one BCW to finish off my wish list.

The BCW bin snapped together fairly easily. It is not water resistant like the IRIS is. In fact, the card holder on each end of the BCW has cut ins that give open access to the interior. On the whole, though, if the comics are bagged, it should do all right in most normal conditions. There is a divider that comes with it, too. That makes for a nice bookend if you don’t have the box full or just to divide between titles. There is only one divider that comes with it. You can buy packs of dividers in sets as few as 3 for $9.99.

We’ll see how this works long-term. For now, I’m happy with it. If you prefer long boxes, they have one that holds 300 comics for around $60.
