DC Worlds Collide

I love DC Comics and recently, it seems there are an influx of DC Comics games. The new game is DC Worlds Collide, which was developed by Warner Bros. Games San Francisco, just came out May 15, 2025, and I’ve just downloaded it on my phone to try out.

DC Worlds Collide is about the Crime Syndicate from another universe has invaded our earth, so we have to unite the best Super Heroes and Super-Villains to defend the planet.

Like all free mobile games are designed to be as addictive as possible. You will just keep playing it, until you’re stopped by the game. They’re timers and you can pay real money to remove those blockers so you can continue to play. For those who don’t want to pay, they also have mechanics like “Daily Rewards” or Daily Quests, which are added to keep the player engaged and coming back to play the game.

They also have various stores, various currency (gems, gold), competitive battles with other players, and “pay to win” items (for those players who wants to win all their battles)… everything is designed to milk the player for money. They both deploy something called “Dark Patterns”, which are things designed to fool you into spending money – like putting the ‘buy’ button right underneath, so if you click too fast, you’ll accidentally buy something. And there’s no confirmation “are you sure you want to buy”, instead just taking the currency. Or having two currencies that looks extremely similar – a rare ‘dark purple’ or the easy-to-come by ‘light purple’ currency. Staring at a tiny screen, you’ll mistaken the two currencies. Mind you, I didn’t pay money, but I was annoyed for mistaken the two currencies or accidentally double-tap on something.

I’ll put it bluntly, if you are the type of players that gets easily addicted and you have money to spend (or no money but still spends!), I cannot recommend these mobile games to you. If you have the discipline, then between all the games, I like DC Heroes and Villains the most.

DC Heroes & Villains

DC Heroes & Villains is a game developed by Jam City and Ludia. On the surface, it is a match-three jewel game, like Bejeweled. However, that’s not really the game. At some point, like level 10, it really turns into a building your superhero team of ‘Heroes & Villains’ to battle some threat.

The setup for the game is that some mystery thing stripped all the super-heroes and villains of their powers. So both sides have to team up to regain their powers and fight back the evil plaguing the world.

You battle through three locations: Gotham City, Metropolis, and Themyscira. I’m only at Metropolis because it’s increasingly harder and harder to level up your characters (at least on the free option). To help level you up, there are ‘Challenges’, ‘Events’, ‘Assault’, and ‘Guilds’. Everything costs energy points, once you exhausted your energy, you’ll have to wait until the meter is refilled (of course, you can always pay to continue).

For the free players, like myself, the game does give you ‘gems’, which are the game’s main currency. At first, I was hesitant on spending the gems, but as you play the game, you realized that the game is pretty generous with the gems.

Right now, I just unlocked the most powerful character on the game: Darkseid, the only six-star character in the game. And it was pretty easy to unlock, if you play the game normally for about 30 days. You have these daily quests, that if you complete 90% of it, you get a Darkseid token. Once you get 30 Darkseid tokens, you can buy the character.

To me, that’s a very fair way for a free player to enjoy the game. I still have a few characters I want on unlock, like Deathstroke and Starfire, but I feel like this game is very enjoyable, if you can get past the constant disconnection, bugs, and all the microtransactions.

DC: Dark Legion

DC: Dark Legion is a game developed by FunPlus, and recently came out on March 2025. The story is the Batman Who Laughs is destroying the DC Universe, and it’s up to you, acting as the Earth’s Monitor, to fightback the darkness.

This game is part base-building (like Fallout Shelter) and part-auto-battle. You need to recruit various DC heroes & villains and have them auto-fight rivals and save cities… This game is all over the place. There are like 50 currencies and 20 different stores. To me, it’s a mess.

The game is ever-developing, for example, Starfire is a brand-new character to unlock. I think that’s part of the problem of this new game, it still feels unfinished and unpolished. At times it feels like it’s another game, but re-skinned with DC Characters. I find it illogical that Superman can be equipped with a belt, boots, and a weapon. I find it weird to assign Superman to do janitorial tasks. Like I said, this felt like a different game.

I am about level 27 in the game, and my War Room (level 15) will take over one day to upgrade. I have about 20 characters, none of them are any good (except for Superman), so I feel the game is very stingy in unlocking characters. For those ultra rare characters, you have to buy these rare mother boxes, and you get the idea: the game wants you to spend money. Everything has options to pay, as a free player, it’s incredibly hard to navigate. For example, there are free items in the store, but it’s hidden randomly with other items that costs money. You can easily accidentally click and buy something. It’s one of the best examples of dark patterns.

Micromanaging, building your base, leveling your characters… it’s not that fun. I think I’m going to drop / uninstalling the game shortly.
