■ Oasis
Oasis are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals), Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs (guitar), Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Liam asked his older brother Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, vocals) to join as a fifth member a few months later to finalise their formation. Noel became the de facto leader of the group and took over the songwriting duties for the band’s first four studio albums. They are regarded as the most globally successful group of the Britpop genre

Like Oasis? You definitely maybe need to see Supernova, the tribute to Oasis band. They are in the middle of a Summer tour, stopping by the Albatross, in Jacksonville, on a Thursday night.
With cover lover bands, part of the fun is being with other fans. Despite not knowing anyone at the concert, you can look around and they are all your best friends… sharing a pint and singing along to all your favorite songs. As much as the band is important on stage, the audience is equally just as vital to bringing the joy and love.
Opening the show was super Oasis fan Danielle Donnangelo, who played some really obscure B-Sides and Z-Sides. I thought I was an Oasis fan, but I sure didn’t know half her set. You know my secret origin, I met Oasis in 1994, saw them again in 1996, saw Liam Gallagher solo and in Beady Eye… I like them, but Donnangelo had some really, really deep cuts. It’s actually the perfect complement to Supernova, who mainly sticks to the singles and hit songs (thankfully they didn’t do “All Around the World” – one of my least favorite Oasis song).
She explained how she got into these B-Sides on stage. She said she was a teenager in New Jersey and would sneak onto chat rooms dedicated to Oasis and met someone named Oasisfan31 (sorry I couldn’t remember their handle) and she gave them her address. Thankfully no one showed up to kidnap her, but instead they mailed her a box of mixtape of Oasis B-Sides and Singles. And that’s pretty much how she became so knowledgeable (and obsessed) to the music of Oasis.
I was hoping she would play “Whatever”, but the most commercial she got was “Married With Children”, which I felt would have been a good song to end with (seeing as it contains the line “There’s no need to say you’re sorry, goodbye I’m going home.”)… but instead, she had a few more minutes on her set that she also played “Bonehead’s Bank Holiday” and set closer “Stay Young”.
I’m kind of glad they got a super Oasis fan to open the show. I mean, it would be a disaster if they hired a Blur cover band to open… although that would actually be pretty cool on second thought.
Supernova took the stage shortly after. They had a full 20 song set – 21 if you count the taped intro song “F**kin’ in the Bushes”, which is the standard intro music for their live shows since 2000.
They had three guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, and the singer. I only caught David (Liam Gallagher), Ryan (Noel Gallagher), Frank, Daniel and Andy. I don’t know who plays Bonehead or Guigsy. They were tight, I feel like it may be the same set for every show… with perhaps except the Noels three-song set. I’ve seen Oasis before, and generally this is the part of the show where the rest of the band goes back stage and do the white lines, while Noel sings solo. You’re going to hate me for this, but I have never liked Noel’s singing style. His songs and lyrics are simple enough, but it’s the exaggerated vooowels that is uniquely Liam’s singing style that I really like. No one sings like Liam.
Speaking of which, David does those Liam mannerisms. You know singing with the mic pointed down, with hands behind his back. Randomly saying nonsensical words between songs (look, no one can understand the Mancunian accent).
By the time Noel finished his set, Liam comes back on stage, this time dressed in his trademark sporty jacket and bucket hat.
They closed off strong, starting with the signature song “Wonderwall” (I kind of wish they would do a weird Mike Flowers version mixed with the regular Oasis version). They covered Slade’s “Cum on Feel the Noize” (which was a B-Side to Wonderwall if I am misremembering?)… I kind of wish they did the Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus”, which was commonly played in Oasis’ 1996 tour.
Then, of course, “Live Forever”, “Champagne Supernova” (which is where they got their name), and “Rock n Roll Star” to close out the set.
It might be another twenty years before Noel & Liam needs more money and will reform Oasis… but while you wait, you can see Supernova on tour now!
