All Summer Long
It’s the summer camp you wish you went to twenty years ago- Camp Screamo was open for business-
Less of a pure nostalgia trip and more of a verification of a genre and scene still thriving two decades later, co-headliners Story of the Year and Silverstein combined forces for the first time to embark on this Camp Screamo Tour, which made a KC area stop at Harrah’s Voodoo Lounge in North Kansas City.
Though the core crowd of longtime fans of these band have aged as well, the night became a chance to relive old memories (and maybe enter the raging pit a bit slower but with added wisdom) and for younger fans, the chance to experience what those older brothers, uncles and fathers experienced, almost a generation ago.
The table had already been set by the previous three bands appearing, and St. Louis post-hardcore/emo band Story of the Year came out strong for their headlining set, beginning with “And the Hero Will Drown”, the opener from their 2003 Maverick Records debut. Crowd surfing, sing a-longs, and raised hands and fists immediately commenced.
New album A.R.S.O.N., (standing for ‘all rage still only numb’ and released in February via SharpTone Records) was represented by a few tracks, including the album’s lead single, “Gasoline (All Rage Still Only Numb)” played next, as was their previous 2023 album, Tear Me to Pieces with the title track following. We caught them live on that tour as well, supporting Yellowcard in Minneapolis.
Vocalist Dan Marsala remains as mesmerizing to watch as he’s been since the early 2000s, still vocally re-impressed the urgency in the songs, which fomented more pit activity and general controlled chaos. The KC audience is likely more enthusiastic as well, being just a few hours west of the band’s hometown.
Equally important, the band’s musicianship remains strong in chemistry and still evolving, with the core lineup of guitarist Ryan Phillips and bassist Adam Russell playing cohesively as drummer Josh Wills helps anchor the rhythm and percussive beatdown.
Songs like “Anthem of Our Dying Day,” “Is This My Fate?,” and a medley of other songs from the era helped build to the night’s closing song, their breakout initial single from 2003’s Page Avenue, “Until the Day I Die,” created one last communal pit swirl and group sing a-long.

Ontario, Canadian band Silverstein would play just before, in support of last year’s duology of two albums, Antibloom and Pink Moon (both via Melbourne label UNFD) and beginning their no-less-powerful set with two from the most recent album, “Negative Space” and “Drain the Blood”, the latter done in studio with another of our favorites, Dayseeker.
The band came up around the same time north of the border as SOTY, and like them, has a lineup that mostly has remained intact (with guitarist Paul Marc Rousseau joining in 2012) which is central to their musical evolution and a key factor in their two decades of sustained success. We’d hadn’t caught them live since 2016 at the long-defunct Mill City Nights in Minneapolis.
Vocalist Shane Told can still move effortlessly between melodic choruses and his more primal screams, pausing to thank the fans for their years of grateful devotion and Rousseau with rhythm guitarist Josh Bradford, alone with their longtime bass and drums pair of Billy Hamilton and Paul Koehler, kept things musically tight all set long.
The horror-inspired visuals and dramatic lighting most enhanced the songs without being a distraction and the band ended strong with their 2005 breakout single which went Gold, “Smile in your Sleep.”

Washington DC duo Origami Angel (Ryland Heagy– vocals, guitar; and Pat Doherty– drums) played a focused and quietest set of the evening (relatively speaking), in support of 2024’s Feeling Not Found with a sound that blends quick guitar riffs and complex tapping with some catchy pop-punk hooks.
The pair were all business- concentrating on their craft instead of interacting with the audience with lyrics of self-doubt and modern isolation in a digital world, while leaning into some pop culture references like Pokémon, though didn’t include the two new songs released just days ago.

Many in the crowd were most eager and arrived early enough for Chicago via Los Angeles ‘grunge-gaze’ singer songwriter Ally Nicholas, who is out in support of last September’s Nevermind the Hurry EP and who plays a blend of grunge, indie, shoegaze, and metal, set to her emotive vocals.
She entered on to a very dark stage that would only be accented by muted blue and red lighting and while her guitarist/collaborator Diego Ferrera and drummer played in an animated style, Nicholas remained more reserved and honed in on the songs and her performance, not addressing the crowd until before her last song, but earning rave cheering and applause and no doubt, even more fans.
