Gym Class Heroes is a rap-rock band from Geneva, NY, formed in 1997 by Travie McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley. Known for hits like “Cupid’s Chokehold” and “Stereo Hearts”, they blend hip-hop, rock, pop, and reggae, and the band name name comes from standing alphabetically in high school physical education.

Class’ is back in session–

After a hiatus of several years, some personal issues, and a legal ownership case to be able to use the name, Gym Class Heroes (stylized as gymclassheroes.) led by charismatic singer/rapper Travie McCoy, has fully returned to action. The group made a stop at Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS as the inaugural act of soccer team Sporting KC’s Soccer Capital Summer Concert Series, that will run through the FIFA World Cup final, on July 19.

The Geneva, NY band’s infectious blend of hip-hop, pop, rock, and alternative music, coupled with clever familiar samples and well-known collaborators, made them stalwarts on pop radio during the early 00’s, playing major festivals and headlining large venues.

A couple breakups and some personal and professional drama later, the band returned to the stage at 2023’s When We Were Young Festival in NV, and have been at it again, ever since. Though they haven’t released a studio full-length since 2011’s The Papercut Chronicles II, new music in the form of a brand-new album, has been promised for later this year.

Gym Class Heroes 2026 06 28 KCKS Sporting ParkMcCoy, sporting his trademark dreads, sideways ball cap, and a Hugo Boss Paddy yellow and green for Brazil polo shirt, emerged affably from backstage, engaging the crowd along the barriers, and moved freely and often to both sides of the stage. The heat index was already at triple-digits and people crowded close to the front, both to get closer to the band, and to take advantage of the limited shade the above canopy was providing.

Because it was a family-friendly event that also featured related activities, vendor booths, and soccer challenges, fans of all ages and generations were seen taking in the performance and singing along and McCoy had the crowd with their hands in the air for much of the show.

“Cupid’s Chokehold” (which samples Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” and went Top 5 on the Billboard 100) was played early in the set, and “Clothes Off!” and “Ass Back Home” turned the concrete promenade into more of a late afternoon dance club.

Before 2025 radio hit, “Golden”, McCoy spoke of his love and musical connection with his collaborator on the track, Sia, and that was followed by” The Fighter”, a 2011 anthemic track featuring and produced by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.

2008’s “Blinded by the Sun” was literally happening to those in the crowd towards the back and on each end, without the protective shade the front provided. Those on the fringe baked in the Midwest heat as a strong wind whipped about to provide only limited relief. 2022’s “Stop It” was taken from McCoy’s most recent solo album, Never Slept Better, and which takes a deep cut sample from a 1968 song by The Godz.

Gym Class Heroes 2026 06 28 KCKS Sporting ParkBefore hit, “Billionaire”, McCoy confessed he still wasn’t one, but was still happy as a “hundred-thousand-aire,” probably also realizing his collaborator on the track, Bruno Mars, was maybe a little farther along to that goal.

And, with one last chance to wave in the high heat, hands went back and forth one last time, for another Top 5 hit from the band, 2011’s “Stereo Hearts”, a Benny Bianco co-produced earworm, that McCoy even revived recently by jumping on stage with collab partner, Adam Levine last November, to perform the song with Maroon 5 at MSG in NYC.

Musical trends may have come and gone over the last two decades, but the memorable hits and Travie McCoy’s personable and authentic stage persona, proved that Gym Class Heroes is welcome back anytime. While good songs might help define an era, they can also be more than simple nostalgia and can transcend into musical legacy. ‘Class’ is back.
