This August, the holy trinity of Archie-Betty-Veronica will be broken when Archie Andrews propose to Veronica for her hand in marriage in Archie #600. Is it me or do you think this is totally lame? Some things just weren’t meant to be: Mulder & Scully should never “get it on” (it happened), Superman marries Lois Lane (it happened), the Scofield brothers breaking out of prison (it happened, then they were sent back to prison, and they broke out again and then they broke back into prison… look, it’s complicated, OK?)

So, I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a comic book geek.

I don’t know if any of you guys are old enough to remember, but there was a time before Previews and (the now-defunct) Advance Comics, when you didn’t know what was going to happen until the books arrive at the local newsstand! Now, especially with the internet, it’s hard to be surprise anymore.

Anyway, so, some random things you should know about Archie:

  • His real name is Archibald Andrews
  • Archie debuted in Pep Comics #22 (December, 1941) as “Chick”
  • The Andrews family are from Scotland, which would make Archie a Scots
  • Archie is the founder and singer of The Archies, a pop rock band with his friends Reggie & Jughead (Betty & Veronica later joined the group as tambourine player and keyboardist).

In regards to The Archies, the band’s greatest hit song is “Sugar Sugar”, as written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim and sung by Ron Dante. The song went straight to #1 on the Billboard pop charts in 1969, earning the fake band a certified gold record. This was the only time a fictional band went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, yes – more successful than other fake bands, like Jose Josie and the Pussycats (although the misspelling made me imagine a fake Mexican band), Gorillaz, and BluesHammer!

Bonus: Hear two other “Sugar Sugar” covers at Cover Lover.

Update (6/4/09 7:23pm): What does Betty think of all this?  Apparently Betty has a blog:

The Saddest Girl in the World!

I am so sad, I don’t even know what to say.
