Here’s some recent news, courtesy of the new news.weheartmusic.com. Links are now friendlier than before. The press releases are still hand-picked by me, so send me an email and if it’s worth mentioning, I’ll post it.

EVAN DANDO
www.evandando.co.uk thelemonheads.net myspace.com

Fans of 90s alternative/modern rock music will know Evan Dando’s name for being the frontsman for the Lemonheads. I have not follow his career that closely, but I know there was a brief thing with Juliana Hatfield and there were drugs involved in his life. I know he’s really into UK rock, often spending most of his time at festivals and hanging out with Oasis or whatnot.

To be honest, I didn’t even know he was touring (or will be touring). The touring is probably for the promotion of Varshons covers album, released last year.

From the press announcement, it looks like Dando will be touring with The Candles (described as sounding like Albert Hammond Jr). It also lists that Evan Dando will be doing some classic Lemonheads songs, along with the covers album mentioned above. I’m expecting him to do classic covers like “Mrs Robinson” and “Luka”.

The tour dates are for the entire month of February. Surprisingly stopping by the 400 Bar in Minneapolis along the way. It’ll still be too cold for me to head out, but I’m hoping to have Lara do coverage when he arrives here.

THE LOST FINGERS
thelostfingers.com myspace.com

Speaking of covers, The Lost Fingers are a “gypsy-jazz” band from Quebec City, Canada. Like Nouvelle Vague turning well-known songs to lounge or Me First and the Gimme Gimmes making songs into punk tunes, it looks like Lost Fingers jazzafied pop songs.

It should be interesting, their jazz covers album theme are songs from the 80s, simply called Lost in the 80s.

    Lost In The 80’s Tracklisting
    1. Pump Up The Jam (Technotronic cover)
    2. You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi cover)
    3. You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC cover)
    4. Incognito (Celine Dion cover)
    5. Touch Me (Samantha Fox cover)
    6. Part-Time Lover (Stevie Wonder cover)
    7. Fresh (Kool & The Gang cover)
    8. Billie Jean (Michael Jackson cover)
    9. Carless Whisper (Wham! cover)
    10. Tainted Love (Soft Cell cover)
    11. Straight Up (Paula Abdul cover)
    12. Black Velvet (Alannah Myles cover)
    13. Joe Le Taxi (bonus)
    14. Belleville Rendez-Vous (bonus)

You can hear their cover of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” at lala.com (recently purchased by Apple!). More details here.

Trivia: The influential AC/DC song lent itself to being the title of Veruca Salt’s debut album, American Thighs. Also, they didn’t list the original performer for “Joe Le Taxi”, but it’s a song made famous by Vanessa Paradis. Not familiar with “Belleville Rendez-vous”, but it looks like Benoît Charest wrote that one.

JULIA NUNES

Julia Nunes – Gone (Ben Folds)

Last on my list is a very young and energetic ukulele musician called Julia Nunes. She’s quite famous for her youtube videos (the numbers I’m told is 30 million views, which by internet standards is like certified Gold or something, right?). Her Ben Folds song, “Gone” came to the attention of Mister Folds himself. As you can see from the said-video, she is infectiously easy to like, and I can see why Folds asked Nunes to do some duets with him on some live shows.

She’s doing some tour this year, preluding to her 5-track EP I Think You Know, out on February 2nd on Rude Butler Records (pre-ordering the EP will get you an autographed copy).

    Tour Dates
    1.14.10 @ 7:00pm Echo Los Angeles, CA
1.15.10 @ 7:30pm The Swedish American Hall San Francisco, CA
    1.16.10 @ 8:00pm Vera Project Seattle, WA
1.18.10 @ 7:00pm CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Minneapolis, MN
    1.19.10 @ 7:00pm Schubas Tavern/ Lincoln Hall Chicago, IL
