Quintron

The last item on the press release is that Quintron are on tour with Black Lips. I did get a chan…

I’ve never seen Quintron and Miss Pussycat before, but I was told to expect two things: puppets and dancing. And you know what? All true.

As I have previously mentioned, Triple Rock Social Club usually means three (or more) bands playing. Warming up the crowd was The Bombay Sweets (myspace), which was a kind of a rockabilly/surfer-ish guitar and drums duo. Singer Nathan seems to have been in a billion other bands (Dynamiters, Selby Tigers, even with Har Mar).

Cave (myspace.com) is an impossibly hard to google-band. And I think they don’t really care about their name either. They’re basically this psychedelic/jam band. They only did, I think, six songs, but each song goes on for about twenty minutes, so it made up for any set times.

By the middle of Cave’s set, the crowd had started to come closer to the stage. There were more people there than I had expected, in fact, the turn-out was really good. It made me wonder how people find out about music like Cave or Quintron and Miss Pussycat. By eleven o’clock, the couple came on stage and Quintron basically said as a matter-of-factually, “The show is about to begin“, and quickly disappeared. The lights dimmed and the spotlight is on the puppet stage.

The puppet story is about an elephant and a tiger, who did some black magic to get “party pizzas”. The police arrived and, if you’re still following the story, was killed by the tiger. I won’t really go into details about the rest of the story, but it sounds like either this whole thing was some weird amazing dream, or simply a story an imaginative child might tell. Either way, it was really weird and well presented.

Incidentally, the whole stage becomes a big Godfather of pizza monster. Easily the highlight of the show for me.

The rest of the show features really upbeat “organ” style of music from Quintron’s keyboard that resembles the front of a car (with working headlights) and Miss Pussycat shaking her maracas.

Their singing style sounds like a lot of yelling to me, but it didn’t really matter, everyone is enjoying themselves, dancing wildly. They are simply just a really, really fun band.

My favorite performance was, maybe I didn’t hear it right, but it sounded like “Bad Mother F*****” (the backup girls shouted back “he’s a bad mother f*****“). I think that’s actually all the lyrics, but it’s repeated over and over, while Quintron jumps into the audience and sang that to the people on the floor.

If you are looking to be entertained, I think you really need to check out Quintron and Miss Pussycat in person. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the dancing part.
