We’ve covered San Cisco live five times (three in Minneapolis, one in Los Angeles, and one in Sydney). Yes, we love them, so it’s nice to catch them again last night at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis.

Opening up for all the U.S. dates so far is Smallpools, a band based out of Los Angeles (although their guitarist Mike Kamerman said that he’s from New Jersey, singer Sean Scanlon is from New York, and everyone else was from Oregon?)

The turnout to last night show was incredible, especially for a Wednesday. Fans packed in early (always a good sign when there is a line before the doors open), because there were a lot of cross-over fans who wanted to see Smallpools as well as San Cisco.

From my understanding, this was Smallpools’ very first national tour, so they were quite excited to play Minneapolis for the first time. They seem like a really new band, playing songs from their Have a Great Summer EP (including “Over and Over” and the set closer “Dreaming”).

Highlight of their set is a cover of the New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give”, which may, or may not, give you an indication of their happy-fun-‘kick your asses’-summer-sound.

Before San Cisco came on stage, someone had this bright idea of giving balloons to the audience. At first, I thought it was part of the show, but as singer Jordi Davieson’s reaction to these “dangerous” balloons, I realized the band had no part in the whole balloon-thing.

This was my fourth time seeing San Cisco, so I was expecting the usual set (“Golden Revolver” being fairly in early with “Awkward” saving their best for last), but I was pleasantly surprised that they mixed up the setlist on this “Beach” tour.
Instead, it would seem that this playlist would showcase songs taken from their debut self-titled album, which came out a few weeks ago on RCA Records.

Of course, the transition was easy for me, having already heard many of these songs and demos from their previous live appearance and having been following their musical career since 2011.

Remember when I told you that I think “Golden Revolver” is perhaps their best song? It would seem that other fans would agree with me, having heard, for the first time, people singing back the lyrics (“and you’re not even remotely kind!“). It was nice to hear that other people love this song as well.

As for the encore (yes, there was one this time), San Cisco came back to do a Daft Punk cover of “Get Lucky” and another song from the self-titled album called “No Friends”.

Anyway, it’s always a pleasure to see San Cisco whenever they are in town. Hope to see them back here sooner than later.
