Cherie Currie is back in Minneapolis, this time playing to some very dedicated Runaways fans at the Belmore/New Skyway Lounge last night, August 11th.

Opening up was L’Assassins, an-all-girl rock/punk-ish band who has a thing for black leather and faux leopard print. They played a lot of tracks, some from their recent 2013 album Lovin’ On The Run including “Be My Dog”, “Creep”, “Gun Chewing Dame”, and the title track (funny enough it was abbreviated to LOTR on their setlist, which any true nerd will tell you that means “Lord of the Ring”).

At first I thought they were basically female Ramones, but that’s not all, as they proved with a very strong finish with a cover of my favorite Shangri-Las song “Simon Says”. I’ve previously written that the song was the Shangri-Las’ very first recording from December 1963.

Remember how I missed the Japhies on Friday? Seems like the lead singer made a miraculous recovery, as the band played tracks from their 22/3 album, including “Darker Times”, “Thrutch” and “Vacation Boogie”.

They were loud and the drummer was encouraged to go nuts, and everyone around me was impressed with the band. I’m glad I finally got to see them, having missed them last Friday and missing them with Pink Mink last year.

By the time Cherie Currie came on stage, all the fans were up closer front. Currie confessed that she was envious of her fans, “If it was me, I’d be in bed!” She was grateful that it was her fans that kept her going as they launched into “Queens of Noise”, followed by another fan-favorite, “California Paradise”.

As you can see from the setlist, lots of classic Runaways songs, but Currie threw in some new solo ones (from that “unicorn” album that she’s recorded by has not been officially released).

I don’t need to tell you that “Cherry Bomb” was something to behold. Wow, Currie should have ended her set with that song, there’s no way you can top it, especially with the entire audience screaming “Ch-ch-cherry bomb!” at the top of their lungs. Instead, Currie wanted to pay homage to David Bowie with a cover of “Rebel Rebel”, which sounded good (who doesn’t love that song), but personally between you and me, it should’ve ended with “Cherry Bomb”.

Anyway, I can tell that these are all dedicated fans, many of them bringing old 12″ to get them signed and many of them were at Currie’s previous shows. In fact, Currie (along with the rest of her band) were all very accessible. She never refuse to sign or pose for photos and she stayed to talk to everyone that came.
