Broken Social Scene, that band consisting of three thousand band members, including Feist, Amy Millan (Stars), Emily Haines (Metric), Brendan Canning, etc., well it looks like Jason Collett of BSS lent his musician …

Basia Bulat's first U.S. 2013 Fall tour date started in Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry last night. It's been a long time since she was last in the Twin Cities, but you can tell her fans missed her by making their way to the show, despite the pending snowstorm outside.

FOREIGN FIELDS

Foreign Fields is described as an "electronic folk" group, but to me, they were more folk than actual electronic. They did use a bit of preprogrammed beats, but they were subtle. The duo (Eric Hillman and Brian Holl) played quiet/sensitive folk rock, starting their set with "Pillars (Pillllars)" from their Anywhere But Where I Am album.

One of the more interesting song from their set was a song written by a seven year old girl from England. The lyrics, about the sea, about smelling like fire, are better than the typical pop song you hear on the radio.

Since they only have a few releases, most of their songs were from the one album, Anywhere But Where I Am, including the last two songs that ended their set, "Names and Races" and "The River Kings".

Basia Bulat was overwhelmed at the turnout to her show, "It's so awesome that you guys made it out here tonight. You were supposed to be at Kanye West's show next door!"

Practically every sentence Bulat said received a massive cheer from her fans. It was so unexpected, that Bulat declared how much she loved the Twin Cities. When it was mentioned that she's from Canada, she said, "I don't know if you guys follow the news, but we're from Toronto. I don't know what to say, maybe we should move to Minneapolis?" A huge cheer and clap quickly followed. Bulat admitted she has not been to Minneapolis in a long time, but based on the feedback, you can tell she's coming back here again very soon.

Basia Bulat

As you can see from the setlist, the majority of songs were taken from her latest work, Tall Tall Shadow, including
"The City With No Rivers", "Promise Not To Think About Love", "Paris Or Amsterdam",
"Wires", "Someone", "Tall Tall Shadow", and "Never Let Me Go".

For the encore, she actually played "The Shore", a song that required a special pianoette. She originally said she couldn't play that song because she was ill-prepared, but her guitarist came to the rescue and produced one for her. She then saw down and played "The Shore", between "Before I Knew" and "It Can't Be You". Everyone was happy.

Basia Bulat is currently on tour in support of Tall Tall Shadow, out now on Secret City Records. For a limited time, you can download the title track on amazon.com for absolutely free.

  1. This review captures the evening well.
“Snails and Lather” sounds like it could be a really interesting song. The correct title, however, is “Snakes and Ladders.”
I heard a few requests for “Pilgriming Vines,” which is the first Basia Bulat song I got familiar with (so it is also a favorite). Sorry she didn’t take them up on it…. Seems she would have been happy playing all night!
    Thanks!
