THUNDERCAT

Look, I love the ThunderCats cartoon (I own all the DVDs)… so I’m always hesitant when a band named themselves after something I love.
To be fair, the Arctic Cat snowmobile Thundercat existed well before the cartoon…

Anyway, enter Thundercat, aka Stephen Bruner, from Los Angeles. He will be heading out on tour in support of his mini-album The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam. The six-track mini-album takes listeners on six spiraling excursions to the outer limits of jazz-funk.

FELIX DA HOUSECAT
theefelixdahousecat.com

Chicago DJ Felix da Housecat recently released a video for “The Natural”, featuring Lee Scratch Perry, taken from his new album From Narrative of Thee Blast Illusion.

Here’s how they described the video:

Directed by Jon Conklin and produced by Devon James Stewart, “The Natural” video captured each artist on a green screen then digitized footage so that it reacts with the audio.

The digital effect is modeled after a piece of hardware called the Rutt Etra Video Synthesizer. Designed by Steve Rutt and Bill Etra in 1970, it was the first ever device of its kind that allowed you to manipulate video rasterization with audio signal.

For this video Conklin recreated the effect digitally, using the track’s bassline as the visual and sonic touchpoint so that video signal breaks up into scan lines and pulses every time the bass note hits.

CATEY SHAW

New York-based singer/songwriter/artist Catey Shaw recently previewed her new single “Walks All Over You” on PopCrush.com. The infectious, 80s-inspired disco/funk-infused pop gem is the first track off of her forthcoming release The Ransom EP, due out this fall. This is the follow up to Human Contact Remix and The Brooklyn EP … the latter was a hit on Reddit (the single “Tomorrow’s Hits” streamed more than 3.7 million on Spotify).

Shaw also also revealed the original artwork for “Walks All Over You,” which she painted herself.

Check out Catey Shaw live at Calgary Pride on September 6th and also a headlining show at Knitting Factory in NYC on October 2nd.
