SHOVELS & ROPES

at First Avenue

Wednesday, 10/05/16, 7pm ($22/$25)

first-avenue.com

We previously caught the husband & wife duo Shovels & Ropes in Denver in April 2013 and wrote, “Although well-equipped with two microphones, the pair elects to affectionately sing many of their songs into the same mic. Approaching close to 200 shows each year, Shovels & Rope churns out their raspy and raw harmonies like a well-oiled rockabilly machine.”

The loving couple will be headlining First Avenue this October 5th, in support of their new album Little Seeds (set for release October 7th).

Matthew Logan Vasquez (of Delta Spirit) to open the show. We previously caught Vasquez in April 2016 and noted, “Matthew has a very distinctive voice but his music does not have a distinctive style and that made me falling head over heels for this guy. His voice was smooth and had a lot of emotion behind it but at the same time, it felt like good, old fashioned rock n roll.”

YOHUNA
at 7th Street Entry

Wednesday, 10/05/16, 7:30pm ($6)

first-avenue.com

Yohuna (aka Johanne Swanson) will be headlining the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis this October 5th in support of her debut album called Patientness (available on Orchid Tapes).

Swanson talked about how personal the record is to her, “I started writing these songs as a healing, coping mechanism. We tell stories of loss so people don’t feel alone. It’s important to talk about distress, and sadness, because no one is isolated from those feelings.”

About the title, it’s in irony: “I’m not a patient person. That’s why I never put out a record, and hate recording. But Patientness became this mantra to me when I was in Berlin. To describe how I felt with needing to express patience, but being unable to do it. It was more like something to remind me to slow down and to reflect and be deliberate. The non-word of it came from living in this place where words were starting to mean less and less.”
