A Perfect Circle’s guitarist Billy Howerdel headlined the Fine Line Music Café on Friday, June 24th, 2022, in support to his debut solo album What Normal Was via Alchemy Recordings, Rise Records, and BMG.
Opening the show was Los Angeles’ Vowws (not to be confused with Vows). The duo featured Matt on guitars and Rizz (with skull makeup) on keys. They traded vocals depending on their song, playing a goth/industrial music to a backdrop of video imagery.
We first saw the duo in Feb 2017 and mentioned, “probably the only Australian/Iranian dark industrial experimental LA-based duo that you’ll ever encounter” and described their music as “the likes of Sisters of Mercy, Swans, newer Gary Numan, and anything goth on the same record label.”
The band worked extensively with Los Angeles artist Jesse Draxler, who collaborated with Poppy for the artwork for I Disagree, so somehow, Vowws was asked to support Poppy on that tour, which we caught in Feb 2020 and said, “The duo’s boy/girl vocals juxtapose like a beam of light amongst their throbbing industrial electro dark beats and songs that build like a sonic plague enveloping the wasteland and their sound is recommended to any fans of Vowws’ former label, Cleopatra Records.”
Vowws’ latest single, “One By One” (with B-Side “Shadow Man”) was the set closer.
Billy Howerdel joined the Tool live crew during their tour and recording of Ænima, and offered his services to any Maynard James Keenan’s future projects. That’s how Howerdel became a founding member of A Perfect Circle. Between A Perfect Circle’s breaks (which happens if Tool or Puscifer are on tour), Howerdel created his solo project called Ashes Divide in 2008.
In 2022, Howerdel announced that he was recording under his own name, and his debut solo album What Normal Was was set for June 10th, on Alchemy Recordings, Rise Records, and BMG. The first single, “Poison Flowers” was played in the middle of the set.
Howerdel’s live band featured Nylo on keyboards, Greyson Nekrutman on drums, Eliot on bass, and Danny Lohner (aka Renholdër from NIN) on guitars.
Musically, Howerdel sounded like he is going for a dark The Cure or UK bands.
He played one Ashes Divide song, “Forever Can Be” near the end of his set.
