Echo & the Bunnymen
with The Riffin’ Trio
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

Liverpool’s Echo & the Bunnymen is back… and this time, playing “Songs To Learn And Sing – The Very Best of Echo & The Bunnymen”. Yes, it’s a greatest hits tour!

We last saw Echo & the Bunnymen in Sep 2022 and wrote, “About 9:30pm, Echo & the Bunnymen, came on stage, in darkness: Ian McCulloch on vocals and Will Sergeant on lead guitars, with Pete Reilly on guitars, Stephen Brannan on bass, Mike Smith on keyboards and Simon Finley on drums. They had the audience in the palm of their hands, hand-picking selective tracks from their 13 albums! I don’t know every song on their playlist, but I knew plenty of diehard fans in the audience that knew them all.”

The Riffin’ Trio to open. The trio are: Jacob Hanson (Halloween Alaska, Mason Jennings, Solid Gold, The Pines, Haley Bonar), Nelson Devereaux (Har Mar Superstar, Mild High Club, Craig Finn, solo artist) and Ted Olson (bass man).

MELT-BANANA
with The Flying Luttenbachers, Tomato Flower and babybaby_explores
at Fine Line

first-avenue.com

Japanese noise artists Melt-Banana is returning to Minneapolis this May 30th, at the Fine Line. The duo (Yako and Agata) is touring in support of their forthcoming album 3+5.

I first saw this band in November 2000 when they opened for Babes in Toyland. They were the loudest band I’ve ever heard. Since then, I’ve caught them at Triple Rock (Oct 2013): “Currently the live band only consists of singer/programmer Yasuko Onuki and guitarist Ichirou Agata. The rest of their music comes from a laptop full of drum samples and samples, a colorful programmed keypad that Yasuko uses throughout the show, and about five or six very large speakers and amps that they bring on tour with them. For just two people, they produced some of the loudest sound I’ve heard at live shows.”

Humbird
with ISMAY
at Turf Club

first-avenue.com

Minnesota-born artist Humbird (Siri Undlin) is on tour in support of her new album Right On. The singer will return to the Turf Club on May 31, 2024.

We saw Humbird in 02 Dec 2023 and said, “Humbird< opened the evening as the crowd slowly ambled in. We caught them at the Fine Line exactly a month ago, opening for Mipso. Again it was Siri Undlin on lead vocal and guitar with Pat Keen on upright bass providing some grooved solos with a “Go Pat Go!” coming from the crowd. After launching into a funky space duo in “Free Life,” Undlin said she just released a new song “Child of Violence” and it was the first time she got hate mail, which she and Keen welcomed, but wanted to hear it face-to-face, preferably at the merch table. To get into the holiday spirit they invited their friend, Clifton on fiddle, to the stage to play a “deranged” Xmas song. It was not so much psychotic as a haunting lament with loose strands of “Greensleeves” hemmed throughout.”

ISMAY to open.
