Together Pangea
with Liily
at 7th St Entry

Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the release of Together Pangea’s Badillac? The West Coast rock trio is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the record by going on a “Celebrates 10 Years of Badillac” tour.

We saw Together Pangea on that Badillac tour in Feb 2014 and said, “together PANGEA is currently on tour in support of Badillac, but surprisingly very few new songs, like the title track, were played. Instead, they did three covers, including a ‘reggae’ version of ‘Gates of Heaven’, plus a few odds and ends. In fact, their entire set was only about 35 minute long (discounting the encore). That’s fine, I don’t think anyone minded (and personally, between you and me, I don’t like hearing “new” stuff all the time). The laid-back California band has a very punk/DIY attitude to their music. Their fans in the front went nuts/moshing for the faster song, particularly at the encore (Nirvana’s ‘Breed’) where they were bodysurfing, possibly inspired by Keegan stage diving on their finale cover song, ‘Gates of Heaven’. together PANGEA is currently on tour with Mozes and the Firstborn, if you’re into a little psychedelic, punk, ‘burger rock’, this is a fantastic pairing. Expect to find both bands at the massive SXSW Music Festival this March 2014.”
Liily to open. We saw the band in Oct 2021 and said, “Liily is still a very new, but they they are very good and shows a lot of promise. Singer, Dylan Nash, reminds me of a stoic Ian Brown, while the band, guitarist Sam De La Torre, bassist Charlie Anastasis, and drummer Maxx Morando, plays post-punk, art-rock music. While the band didn’t mention their influences, I felt like they were inspired by a lot of UK-bands, as I hear sparks of The Fall and Gang of Four in their sound… which is a positive thing.”

Built to Spill
with Floating Witch’s Head and Rich Mattson and the Northstars
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

Wow, it’s been 30 years since Built to Spill released There’s Nothing Wrong With Love. I remember playing some singles from the album from my radio DJ days.

We saw Built to Spill in Sep 2016 and wrote, “Built to Spill began their show, somewhat ironically, with Stop the Show from 1997’s Perfect From Now On. It was a great way to start, building up from a lulling melody into a spacy guitar frenzy. They saved The First Song for a bit later. The band performed as a three piece, leaving all guitar duties in Doug Martsch’s hands. And one thing is certain; the man plays a mean guitar. His tremolo hangs loose as he tears up and down the fretboard while making liberal use of a wah pedal and an Echoplex delay machine.”

Floating Witch’s Head and Rich Mattson and the Northstars to open.

King Buzzo & Trevor Dunn
with JD Pinkus
at Turf Club

first-avenue.com

Melvins’ found and lead singer King Buzzo has teamed up with Mr. Bungle’s bass player Trevor Dunn for this “King Dunn Tour.”

We last saw Melvins in September 2016 and wrote, “The Melvins began their set with Eye Flys, a song with perhaps the longest, most drawn out buildup ever, slowly plugging along and mired in sludge. The drums sounded like bones hitting rocks. Then without warning the cymbals crashed, the vocal kicked in and they were off. Definitely different from the speed of thrash metal, but enjoyable just the same. Drummer Dale Crover did most of the talking between songs, and all three band members sang lead at various points during the show. Bassist Steve McDonald sang lead on a cover of Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison, a song by his band Redd Kross.”

Support for this tour will be from JD Pinkus, featuring members of Butthole Surfers. Their new album Grow A Pear is out now.
