    Paul Weller

The Modfather Paul Weller is currently on a tiny US tour heading to Riot Fest in Chicago. For some reason, Minneapolis is just one of four US non-festival dates, and so naturally, the Varsity Theater show last night, September 10th, was sold out.

The great Modfather Paul Weller announced his first North American tour since 2017. The influential singer (who inspired many Britpop bands) is touring in support of his upcoming album 66, set for May 24, the day before his 66th birthday.

66 includes contributions from Noel Gallagher, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Madness’ Suggs McPherson, Richard Hawley, The Blow Monkeys’ Dr Robert, Le SuperHomard’s Christophe Vaillant, and Erland Cooper, with string arrangements by Hannah Peel.

Paul Weller at Pantages Theatre (13 Oct 2017)

We saw Weller when he was last here in Oct 2017 and wrote, “After the intermission, lights dimmed as the intro music of The Beatles’ ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ announced Paul Weller and his band taking the stage for a breathtaking two and a half hour headlining set that would touch on all points, of his over four-decade long career. Weller has surrounded himself with a crack band for the tour featuring longtime sidemen Steve Cradock (guitar), Andy Crofts (bass), Steve Pilgrim (drums), and Ben Gordelier (percussion) as well as new addition Tom Van Heel (keys) and kicked things off with 2015’s ‘I’m Where I Should Be’, a song which encapsulated The Modfather’s confidence in still finding his place in today’s musical landscape and also echoed the sentiments of the thousand people in attendance cheering him on.”

    George Houston to open.

Charly Bliss is returning to the Twin Cities, playing the Turf Club, in St Paul, on September 17, 2024. The band’s forthcoming album Forever is set for release on August 16 via Lucky Number.

Charly Bliss at 7th Street (12 May 2017)

We just saw the band in May 2017 and wrote, “Though they’ve been a band for half a decade, it seems like the time is now for Charly Bliss, the four-piece breaking through to alternative radio and singer Eva Hendricks was in full celebration mode, even dressing in a fetching white dress, reminiscent of Doll Parts-era Courtney Love. The group is in support of debut full length, Guppy (Barsuk Records) released just a couple weeks ago, with the Onion’s AV Club already deeming it “an instant classic”. The band’s sound is akin to the likes of Sleater-Kinney and Veruca Salt (who they’ve both toured with) and consists of Hendricks, her older brother Sam, bassist (and former boyfriend) Dan Shure, and guitarist Spencer Fox, who she met at age fifteen and who actually voiced Dash in Disney’s The Incredibles and Mudbud in Air Buddies.”

Raffaella at First Avenue (24 Sep 2023)

Raffaella to open. We saw her in Sep 2023 and said, “Local indy pop singer Raffaella Meloni opened up the evening. She’s actually a transplant from Manhattan who made the leap to the Twin Cities after a chance encounter with the lead singer of Hippo Campus, Jake Luppen, turned into something more, as in moving in together. “I like Minneapolis,” she said of her new home. “It smells better.””

We saw Missio in May 2017 and wrote, “Opening up the show was Austin duo Missio, featuring singer Matthew Brue and producer David Butler. For their live shows, they’re joined on stage by a live percussionist…. The band played tracks from their then-forthcoming Loner album, such as ‘I Don’t Give a…’ (the recording of the record featured Zeale). As always the duo was very thankful that fans knew and help promote their breakthrough single ‘Middle Fingers’ (the single peaked at #9 on the Alternative charts), which ended their brief 35-min set.”

Buzzcocks at Varsity Theater (11 Sep 2014)

We saw Buzzcocks in Sep 2014 and wrote, “I may have said that Pete Shelley was the only original member of Buzzcocks. Although that is technically true, I believe Steve Diggle (who joined later) is really as much a part of the Buzzcocks as anyone since 1976. And let me tell you – watching Diggle on stage is a delight. I could not take my eyes off of his well-practiced moves; the way he kicks bottled water, the way he holds his guitar, the way he shuffles to and fro… Diggle was having the time of his life on stage and it is just wonderful to watch.”

    Grumpster to open.
