American rock band Everclear recently sold out First Avenue’s mainroom on Sunday night. The band was incredibly thankful and was very happy to see so many fans packed the First Avenue’s dancefloor. Band leader Art Alexakis, said that the last time they sold out in Minneapolis was at the height of their popularity, around 1996… so it felt like a return to the good old days of radio hit songs.

Speaking of 1996, opening the show was Maryland’s Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, who signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records in 1996. They had a huge hit with “High” (which was their set finale) and found themselves touring with such 90s bands like 311, Live, Creed, Fuel, Finger Eleven, etc.
Near the end of their set, they wanted to take a photo of the sold-out audience, but they didn’t want to be pretentious that this was their audience… so instead they asked everyone to turn around and hold up their devil horns for their sound guy and his twin brother.
Singer Jimi Haha would later resurfaced on Marcy Playground’s set (for “America” and “Sherry Fraser”).
The last time we saw New York’s Marcy Playground, it was in June 2017, but it wasn’t the original trio. Instead Dylan Keefe had family commitments: “Fellow band member, bassist, and Minneapolis native Dylan Keefe was unfortunately not present for this latest homecoming show, as his wife recently had a baby, but was dutifully filled in for by Dishwalla bassist Alexander, who simply took off his jacket as a form of costume change, jokingly saying he wouldn’t be joining Fuel to play too.”
Now, Keefe, along with drummer Shlomi Lavie and guitarist/singer John Wozniak, was excited to finally play First Avenue. They tell us that they grew up around here and have always wanted to play First Avenue. In all their 30 years of touring, they finally made it to First Ave! They were gleaming with excitement.
Of course, they saved their hit song, “Sex and Candy” near the end. Before they played it, they gave us fair warning so we could take out our phones to tape the moment… and everybody did. Everybody sang along, it was the song they’ve been waiting to hear.
We like Everclear and we know that the band is dedicated to serving their fanbase. They’ll play all the hit songs that fans wants to hear, as we mentioned in last year and wrote, “…get ready for “two hours of hit songs!”… and that’s what Everclear delivered. Everyone who grew up in the 90s knows the famous Portland band. The group, led by Art Alexakis, had found success when they signed to Capitol Records in the mid-90s. Their two famous singles, “Santa Monica” and “I Will Buy You a New Life”, which, of course, they played on their set.”
Currently the band features Art as band leader and singer, Dave French as guitarist (his first time at First Avenue), Freddy Herrera as bassist, and drummer Brian Nolan. Most of the band members joined in 2009, with Nolan as the newest member, having joined in 2018.
For Minneapolis, there was a request for the band to play “Unemployed Boyfriend”, which the band re-learned and play for us on Sunday night. Art said that he hates the song, but if the song meant something to his fan, he’ll be more than happy to play it, per request.
After the show, the band hung out at the Merch area to sign any albums that fan bought.
