Weekend Gamer: Fallout Season One Steelbook
I swore, when I was in the middle of moving to Jacksonville, that I need to stop collecting things. And for a while, I would not allow myself to buy anything new… especially when considering that I lost half my comic book collection, lost most of my toys (or rather sold off), and lost half my movie collection. The few things that I kept intact was my little Fallout collection.
I don’t really need to explain my love for Fallout, I’ve been a fan since 1997, when it first came out. I still have all the manuals and have occasionally gone back to play the game now and then. When Amazon announced they were making a television show based on the Fallout game, I was worried. They could easily mess it up, all you have to do is take a look at their adaptions of The Wheel of Time, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Halo… they are all terrible.
When the show was made available on Amazon Prime, in April 2024, I stayed up all night to binge through the entire television series. I’ve never done that before, especially watching it live with thousands of other fans.
The good news is that the show is good. Like really good. The filmmakers clearly understand the Fallout Universe, and created a show for fans of the game. That’s not all, they also introduced some new ideas into the universe. One of the biggest thing that came out of the show was that Vault-Tech was the one that started the war. That was mind-blowing, excuse the pun, because we’ve always assumed that it was the Chinese or the Russians were the ones that dropped the nuclear bomb.
The story is also an original story, not a recycled re-hash of the game. We’re introduced to three different characters from the Fallout world – a clueless vault dweller named Lucy, a gun-slinging ghoul called “The Ghoul”, and a Power Armor soldier named Maximus. In some weird way, it’s like the good, the bad, and the ugly. They all have their own little story, but their paths crossed.
I like the show so much that I had to own the Collector’s Edition of Fallout: Season One, which is a Steelbook, with some art cards. Of course, in the middle of my move and recent travel to Minneapolis to collect the last remainder of my comic books… I did not pre-order the Steelbook and it sold out. Sure, I could just buy the regular version, but diehard fan knows we can’t live with that. Give me the ultimate version, or give me death! Something like that. I can’t live with knowing there’s a better version out there.
So I waited and waited. And it paid off. I was able to grab a used copy (actually brand new) for $30. Of course, because this is Amazon, they did not offer a digital code, but if you have Amazon Prime, you can always access the show with your Prime account. The other thing is that the three-disc set is 4K only with no options for Bluray or DVD. As far as I know, there’s no audio commentaries, but there are some features on the third disc like makeup for the Ghoul and meet the filmmaker Jonathan Nolan.
To me, this is somewhat of a bare-bones release, but that’s fine. This might be the last Steelbook or collectible TV or Movie that I will buy physically. I need to downsize my collection, and so I will need to be very picky about what I buy in the future.
Now that I’m all set, I can look forward to enjoying Fallout: Season 2, set to premiere in December 2025. We can also look forward to a new slew of Fallout merchandise with the new season! We already know McFarlane will be releasing action figures. There’ll be Halloween masks from Trick or Treat Studios ($30 and $60 versions).
