As you know, as a collector of these Morrissey/Smiths books (as seen here), I have own Morrissey’s memoir, Autobiography (2013) and guitarist Johnny Marr’s Set the Boy Free (2016) (Andy Rourke died 2023, without releasing his book). So I’m looking forward to checking out what Joyce has to say.
The book won’t re-tell well-documented Smiths story, but rather what Joyce’s ‘the feeling’ of his time in the band. I am particularly interested in hearing about the promised of a 25% split agreement (which Morrissey dispute). They eventually went to court for the promised money. Rourke, who was in debt at the time, settled out of court for £83,000 and 10 per cent of royalties. Joyce stuck to his gun, and was eventually awarded £1 million in back-royalties and 25%. To this day, Morrissey hates Joyce and Rourke with passion, calling them lawnmower parts… that’s why I never thought he would reform The Smiths (although in recent days Morrissey wants to reform and make money).
I’ve met all the Smiths, except for Moz, and they’re generally really nice to their fans. I normally would like to physically buy the book, but may settle for a digital copy if the option for the physical book is not available. Basically, what I’m saying is that it might take me a little time to track down the book, preferably at a decent price.
