R.I.P. Brad Arnold (3 Doors Down)

Brad Arnold, the lead singer (and former drummer) of Mississippi post-grunge hard rock band, 3 Doors Down, has passed away at the age of 47, following a battle with Stage IV clear renal cell carcinoma, which had metastasized to his lung and then kidney cancer.

An official statement on social media reads in part: “With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, [Brad] passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer.”

Above all, he was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time and kindly asks that their privacy be respected. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”

The band was best known for their breakout single, “Kryptonite” which Arnold composed while being distracted during a high school math class.

Arnold was born on September 27, 1978, in Escatawpa, MS, forming 3 Doors Down in 1996 alongside Matt Roberts (lead guitarist who died in 2016), and Todd Harrell (bass guitar). The band’s first studio album, 2000’s The Better Life, went on to be certified 7× platinum and featured hit song, “Kryptonite” which reached number three on the charts.

Away from the Sun, the band’s second album, was released in 2002 and peaked at number eight on the charts, eventually going multi-platinum as well. Arnold was a recovering alcoholic and a devout Christian, after being encouraged into recovery by country singer Charlie Daniels, and was a proud supporter of the military as well, expressing support to veterans at every concert.

We caught the band in concert most recently when they supported Creed, playing the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, in late 2024.

“So hold me when I’m here, right me when I’m wrong
You can hold me when I’m scared, you won’t always be there
So love me when I’m gone, love me when I’m gone.” –
