Prince
Prince was an American singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. Often being credited as one of the greatest musicians of his generation, he pioneered the Minneapolis sound and was influential in the evolution of various other genres.
Paisley Park invited W♥M to a sneak preview of Prince 10th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition, or as the estate representative Makala Elder (Museum Collection Manager) and Eric James (Content and Media Manager) put it, his transition from this plane of existence.
The exhibit takes us through his seven pillars of life. It is mostly video based highlighting his legacy, visual media tying together beautifully with the music. The first things we noticed were the iconic motorcycle from Purple Rain, the academy award and the Yamaha CP-70, sitting on top, a white scarf tied around an orange hat. I couldn’t stop staring at the outfits, loving the fashion and wishing I could try on the coat.
In the next room, milling about after the movie, mesmerized by the neon “Love in Motion.” Underneath, an artist rendition of Prince by Dan Lacey. In the same corner, an article about Prince’s charity, Live 4 Love. On the same wall in the following corner, a triangle piece of the fence where fans have left their own art, gifts and stories. There was an interactive touch screen where you could leave your own story of how you came to find Prince.
Many times, I’ve visited the 100-foot mural of Prince in downtown Minneapolis. That night in Chanhassen, we drove the 4 minutes to look for the 20-foot-high face of Prince from a New Zealand artist. I was saddened to see that an apartment complex had gone up in its place. This is all the more reason to go back to Paisley Park for his Celebration of life, June 3rd through the 7th.
