Fruit Bats at Fine Line (Oct 22, 2026)
Fruit Bats (Eric D. Johnson) returns to Minnesota, playing the Fine Line, on October 22, 2026.

Fruit Bats
We saw Fruit Bats at the Icehouse last year and said, “It wasn’t Fruit Bats, plural, but just Eric D. Johnson — a man, his guitars, a harmonica, and a small keyboard setup. (He mentioned that “Nathan, in the back, running sound” also was contributing keys and vocals — clever, if true.) Even so, the stripped-down format suited him. “This is going to be a little different — just one guy, singing sad songs, very loudly,” he warned early on. Minneapolis’s Icehouse — perfectly sized for his bright, tender voice — responded with near-cathedral respect and quiet. Signs around the bar politely asked for silence. “Thanks for the quiet,” Johnson said, “glad there’s no frozen drinks being made over at the bar.” A small mercy, and one that kept the focus where it belonged: on his songs’ twangy melancholy and unassuming wit. (He overheard a halted “woo” during a vocal part, and underlined that “woos” were cool and encouraged.)”

London alt-rock band Palace are touring in support of Ox (arrives Sept 18th via Palace Presents/AWAL). The tour will stop by First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on October 22, 2026.

Sammy Rae and the Friends at Palace Theatre, St Paul (05 Oct 2023)
We last saw Sammy Rae in October 2023 and wrote, “On this tour, it would seem that the theme is Sammy Rae and the Friends going to camp or probably lost in the wilderness. The stage dress was amazing, with a large hand drawn trees backdrop, a tent, vines and shrubbery, with wooden directional signs. A lot of thought and effort was put into creating the stage, and to complete the theme, the band is dressed in survival safari gear. They really committed to the whole thing, it was awesome. The Friends conists of Kellon Reese (alto saxophone), Max Zooi (tenor saxophone), James Quinlan (bass), Debbie Tjong (keys and background music), Will Leet (guitarist), and C-Bass Chiriboga (drums). While Rae said she’s influenced by Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, the Sammy Rae and the Friends’ music is more funk, jazz, and rock.”
