■ Television (band)
Television was an influential American rock band from New York City, featuring Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. Originally formed from an earlier group called the Neon Boys, Television became an early staple of the Lower Manhattan music club CBGB alongside contemporaries like Patti Smith. Unlike many of their raw punk peers, Television was known for a clean, technical, and jazz-influenced style featuring complex, interlocking guitar work between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd.
Television’s guitarist Richard Lloyd has died on Saturday, November 7. He was 75.
Their seminal band Television fully came together after Tom Verlaine (who died in 2023) and guitarist Richard Lloyd began playing NYC punk clubs like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City and releasing their first single in 1975 with Fred Smith replacing bassist and punk icon Richard Hell. Television released only two albums, Marquee Moon and Adventure, before breaking up in mid-1978
It’s been said that Lloyd’s co-songwriting on “See No Evil” (a nearly 11-minute track) cast a vast influence on such bands as Sonic Youth and R.E.M.
