Influenced By Sounds Like Gravy Train!!!!, Peaches, Miranda July, Le Tigre, Sadie Benning |
Nicky Click is described as “one girl and her minidisc player”. I think the very first time I saw such minidisc action was with Peaches & Gonzales, which Nicky Click is often compared to.
The album I got is I’m on my Cell Phone (released November 13th), has some pretty catchy songs, but I don’t think it would compare to seeing these songs performed live. And of course, she is about to start her long tour (conveniently skipping Minneapolis). Most of these DIY electronic (the cool kids are calling it “lektro”) bands are usually one person and are often very fun to watch.
I also wanted to mention in addition to her quirky music, there’s guest appearance galore: Katastrophe, Johnny Dangerous, JenRO, Cathy Cathodic, Hornet Leg, Danny Damage, and Mr. Owl (her father).
The title song, “I’m on my Cell Phone”, pretty much best sum up what Nicky Click is all about. The chorus is very catchy: “I’m on my cell phone/You better leave me alone/Get in your car and go home/I’ve got a new ringtone/And you’re on permanent roam.”
However, I think the best and most different song on the album is “Dreams of a Dreamer”. The song is nothing like anything else on this album. The song is a duet and really show off what a great voice Nicky Click has.
Upon further investigations, I found out that the song is actually written by fellow resident from Durham, New Hampshire, Richard Gsottschneider. The same song also appears on his latest album Somewhere in Baltimore.
Nicky Click’s I’m on my Cell Phone can be purchased on nickyclick.com or through her live shows.
