Love in October is a Minneapolis based indie/rock band, founded by two swedish brothers, Erik and Kent Widman in 2006. They apparently moved to Mpls in the early 2000’s. Erik (vocals/guitar/keyboards) and Kent (bass) are joined by Charlie Abbott (guitar/piano), and Chresten Hyde (drums). “Pontus, The Devil, and Me” is their first full length record after their debut EP, Words of Sound, was released in early 2007.

As I listened to these indie/pop/rock diddies about love and frustration, I couldn’t help but hear and feel a comparison to Phantom Planet, but maybe its just me. The songs are very well written as short and sweet tunes throughout the album, while blending together with ease. There are at least 2 of the tracks on the album that really show their Swedish roots, most notably “Vi Gar Till Stranden”, which seems to be in Swedish. And speaking of the vocals, that is really my favorite part of listening to these guys. I found myself humming along to the sound of Eriks’ voice throughout. My favorite track on the record is “A Day in the Life Of”, which has been accompanied by a very elaborate video which earned the group a MTVU Woodie nomination for Best Music On Campus.

I am not a huge indie fan myself, but I really enjoyed this record. The tempo is upbeat in most of these power-pop songs, similar to that of Motion City Soundtrack[W♥M]. I really like the Minneapolis skyline on the album cover too, being from and residing in Mpls, I couldn’t be more proud!

Editor’s note: Yesterday (Apr 10th) saw the premiere video for “Petrula The Destroyer”, which features cute puppets pulling the string on Erik. You can download the video at the world famous College Music Journal.

Excerpt from the article:

“We’re excited to be releasing our third music video and our weirdest one to date,” says frontman Erik Widman. “This one was really fun to make and Behn Fannin did a great job directing it. If you could win an Oscar or an Emmy for a music video, we would win a Osc-Emmy for this one. It’s an instant classic.”
