Delhi 2 Dublin played the Cedar Cultural Center yesterday, May 1st. This tour is for their US release of Planet Electric, and what’s strange is that there was no opening band. The last time I went to see a band and it didn’t have a warmup act, was for The Cowboy Junkies, and even they confessed that they were greedy and wanted to play for three hours.
It was a pretty good turnout, especially for a Sunday evening. And everyone there was ready for dancing and having fun.
I think Delhi 2 Dublin’s got their show all in order, with each band members playing a little instrument solo, before finally lead singer Sanjay Seran jumped on stage. He’s doing a lot of hopping and spinning and holding his hands in the air. They’re having even more fun than the audience.
I’m not that familiar with Delhi 2 Dublin’s work, since most of their songs are sung in Hindi, it was really hard for me to tell what songs were played. From my notes, there was a pretty epic “word” battle when the rest of the band took a break and the tabla guy was repeating what the male fiddle player was saying. Most of the songs on the set was from Planet Electric, including “The Happy Track”, “Give It Away” (dedicated to their Prime Minster for being a “dumbs****“). They ended their set with “Tommy”.
There were three songs for the encore, the last of which was “S.O.S.” … which, when done live, they medley in Sting’s “Message In A Bottle” song.
Finally, I should also mention that Delhi 2 Dublin is the most patchworky mix of people and genre I’ve ever seen. It’s “world music”, but blends in Indian music, with celtic. It’s also a little cuban, a little riverdance, a little electronica, a little reggae, a little hip hop, etc. And on top of that, they’re from Canada.
All this mixture, and you quickly forget why there is an Asian guy, wearing a kilt, playing a sitar.
