Arcade Fire

The post-punk genre and the "Americana art-rock" of, say, Arcade Fire. But whereas Arcade Fire, especially on their recent album Neon Bible, have a murky lo-fi sound and a certain atmosphere of portentous pomposity* .…

Arcade Fire is under fire lately. The Canadian band demanded that all attendees at their arena concert tour this year must wear suits and formalwear (the fine print when you purchase their tickets lists Please Note: NIGHT OF SHOW: Please wear formal attire or costume.) at all their shows.

Before their show in Montreal, the band tweeted "Formal attire or costume MANDATORY. (Formal wear = suit, dress or fancy something. . .)." and when they played London, singer Win Butler told the crowd, "To anyone who felt uncomfortable dressing up, I'm not sorry."

Fans were clearly upset about this mandatory dress code. Non fans say that Arcade Fire is the most pretentious band in the world.

I guess Arcade Fire is now backing down on their mandatory formal dress code, telling fans to "relax" and that "it's super not mandatory." Still, I think it's too late, the original message is already out there.

Personally, I will not be attending any of their shows, now or in the future. Look, I'm not a fan of people telling me what to do and what to wear. I hope Arcade Fire understand why fans are upset. All of this could have been avoided if they made dressing up a voluntarily thing, instead of being dictators about it.

Anyroad, my favorite thing out of this is what Noel Gallagher (Oasis) thought about this on rollingstone.com:

Well, what's the point of that? Do you know what the point of that is? That is to take away from the sh** disco that's coming out of the speakers. Because everybody's dressed as one of the Three Musketeers on acid. "What was the gig like?" "I don't know, everyone was dressed as a teddy bear in the Seventies." "Yeah, but what was the gig like?" "Ah, f*** knows, man, I have no idea. I was dressed as a flying saucer." "Yeah, but what was the gig like?" "F*** knows. I don't know. Seen Cheech and Chong, there, though." Not for me.

Arcade Fire is currently out on tour in support of their recently released of the double-album Reflektor, out now on Merge Records.
