400 Bar

If you live in Minneapolis, you might have already heard that the 400 Bar is closing its doors after seventeen years of operation. They are currently auctioning off memorabilia from the venue via …
It’s official: the 400 Bar is coming back at the Mall of America on June 2014.

Since the 400 Bar’s closing in December 2012, we’ve been assured many times that the venue will eventually come back in Minneapolis, but I’m still in shock.

In the latest article by bizjournals.com written by Nick Halter, they gave hint of the 400 Bar’s future plans.

To summarize the article:

  • The new 400 Bar will be at the Mall of America.
  • Grand opening in June 2014.
  • 25,000 square feet
  • Daytime section will feature Midwest Music Museum, for tourists and music fans
  • Nighttime section will feature a concert venue, with a capacity of 1,000 people (fitting for both standing-room and sitting events).
  • Restaurant section (taking up 9,000 square feet) won’t be ready until September 2014

  • I’m optimistic for the 400 Bar’s rebirth, but there seem to be too much going on here. Seems like there are three distinctive separate businesses.

    Midwest Music Museum

The Midwest Music Museum’s website (midwestmusicmuseum.com) concert section has a 400 Bar biography:

Originally located in Minneapolis, MN the 400 Bar is known for introducing Minnesota music audiences to artists such as: Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, Joanna Newsom, Spoon, The White Stripes, The Drive-By Truckers, The Arcade Fire, Dr. Dog, The National and The Queens of the Stone Age. And Presenting legends like The Pretty Things, Rolling Stones’ Guitarist Mick Taylor and Leon Russell.

Fiercely independent purveyors and facilitators of original music for decades, the first location with 275 capacity enjoyed world wide recognition and welcomed the first and sometimes only local club performances of international icons such as England’s Mumford & Sons, Dido, The Frames from Ireland, Welsh groups The Super Furry Animals, The Stereophonics and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Czech bands Uz Jsme Doma and The Plastic People of the Universe, Australia’s Go-Betweens, and Scottish Rockers Idlewild, Arab Strap, and The Delgados.
