Sweet Spirit

Austin locals Sweet Spirit (members of A Giant Dog) will be headlining the 7th Street Entry this Sunday in support of their sophomore record St. Mojo (out April 7 via Nine Mile Records).
General B & the Wiz

General B And The Wiz to open. Also worth noting: seeing as they are friends with Har Mar Superstar by their photos, I would bet to find him at this show.

Austin’s Sweet Spirit stopped by the 7th Street Entry last Sunday, April 9th, to promote their latest record Mojo (Nine Mile Records).

Opening up the show was local band General B and The Wiz (singer Quincy Voris, guitarist Seth Duin, bassist Kevin Coughenour, additional live guitarist Kyle… I don’t think I saw their keyboardist Kai Brewster).
Originally formed as a satire band, they’ve now become somewhat of a party or jam band. The group was excited that they’ve met their current GoFundMe campaign goal of $10k to raise money to record and produce their upcoming record… even previewing the first downloadable single called ‘Skeleton’.

The band repeated kept saying they didn’t have any merchandise… as if it was a running joke. Instead they kept trying to get the audience to go donate to their page to get free downloads.

I’m happy to see they have a good fanbase, but it felt like they did act like they were the headliner. They played over 53 minutes on their set and forced Sweet Spirit to delay their set time. I’m sure the Austin band didn’t care, but I did find it a little disrespectful to not know (or care) to wrap up your set in the time limit.

Originally a nine-piece band, Sweet Spirit, at least for this 2017 tour, is currently a six piece, featuring: Andrew Cashen, Sabrina Ellis, Joshua Merry, Jake Knight, Jon Fichter, Danny Lion. That’s still a lot of people for a typical rock band.

They normally don’t start with ‘The Power’, but for this special night, singer Sabrina Ellis felt they needed to start the show with a “slow song”. Based on hearing the band talk about other local bands around here (particularly a shout-out to Teenage Moods), it sounded like the band is well beloved around the Twin Cities.

The highlight of the show was an appearance by special guest Har Mar Superstar, which we’ve successfully predicted weeks ago.

The local hero sang, with the help of Ellis, a cover of Pulp’s ‘Common People’. The live rendition is possibly one of the best covers of this song I’ve ever heard, definitely a lot more faithful than William Shatner/Joe Jackson’s version. The only thing they changed is fag (a British slang for cigarettes) to weed. I hope the next time they cover ‘Disco 2000’.

For the faithful, the band came back on stage for the encore. Ellis is now stripped down to just a bra and panties. By the way she handles herself (completely comfortable with less clothes), this is just a regular night for her.
