Kurt Vile and The Violators
with Natural Information Society
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

Philadelphia psych-pop master Kurt Vile is back with his new album (watch my moves) (Verve Records).

Billed as Kurt Vile and The Violators, Vile will headline First Avenue in support of the new record. We saw Vile (with Courtney Barnett) in Oct 2017 and said, “Like their record, some songs were a lot of fun, while some songs are long guitar droning (with everyone’s hair covering their face as they concentrate on playing the chords). It was very much harmonies, both combative vocals, and guitar harmonies (or “guitarmonies” as Barnett would have it).”

Natural Information Society to open.

Belle and Sebastian
with Divino Niño
at Palace Theatre

first-avenue.com

You know we love Belle and Sebastian. The band writes amazing songs, and their live shows are equally amazing.

The last time they played here, it was at the Zoo in July 2019, and they played some rare songs live – including “This Is Just a Modern Rock Song”, which is unheard of because of the long length of the song… but it was pretty awesome to hear it played live (even if it was abridged).

Belle and Sebastian’s new album is called A Bit of Previous, and it’s available on Matador Records.

Divino Niño to open.

A Place To Bury Strangers
with Glove and the Cult of Lip
at 7th St Entry

first-avenue.com

We previously mentioned the A Place To Bury Strangers show in Feb 2022, but that date as rescheduled to May 28th… which I think is a good move for me (as I generally do not cover shows in the winter).

A Place To Bury Strangers’ new album See Through You is out now on Dedstrange.

Tampa-based Glove to open. Glove’s debut album Boom Nights is out now.

Local group Cult of Lip is also on the bill. We first knew the band as Vats, before they changed it the Cult of Lip.

The Rural Alberta Advantage
with Sister Ray
at Fine Line

first-avenue.com

Acclaimed percussive folk-rock trio The Rural Alberta Advantage will be headlining the Fine Line on May 28th, in support of their new EP, The Rise (Saddle Creek/Paper Bag Records).

We caught the band in Sep 2019 and wrote, “As for the encore, they didn’t really leave the stage. Instead, on the last song, all three band members went into the audience and started singing “Goodnight”. At first, without a mic, it was hard to hear singer Paul Banwatt, but as the audience shush to hear the vocals – it was pretty intimate. I suppose that they usually end their set this way (especially with loads of people), as they seem to know what they were doing when the final song came on.”

Sister Ray to open.
