French band Air just played their landmark, debut album Moon Safari from start to finish at the State Theatre, in Minneapolis, on October 6, 2024, as part of their celebration for the album’s 25th Anniversary. As I have previously mentioned, the first time I heard Air’s “Sexy Boy”, it was literally like nothing I’ve ever heard and immediately had to own their album. I have bought many Air albums over the years, but the one that I keep coming back to is Moon Safari. It’s my personal favorite Air album.
Opening up the Moon Safari shows were divided between two DJs: Minimal Wave Records’ Veronica Vasicka and Berlin’s Rachel Aiello, who goes under the stagename Layne.
For the Minneapolis show, we got Layne, who played some British mix of music, including Saint Etienne and Broadcast.
It should be noted that neither DJs were advertised or were they announced.
As advertised, Air played their beloved debut studio album Moon Safari, from start the finish. The album is about 45 minutes, so the remainder of the show the band took the time to play some fan favorites, like “Cherry Blossom Girl” and “Don’t Be Light”… followed by a final encore. The entire program is about an hour and a half.
That’s basically the summary of the show. What you need to know is that this was an incredible experience. You see, the band brought with them, what looks to be a million-dollar art stage. The stage was designed by Antoine Jorel and Pierre Claude, and it is, personally speaking, the best part of the show. The walls are video screens, which sometimes gives the illusion of looking into infinity. The massive stage houses Jean-Benoît Dunckel (on the left) and Nicolas Godin (on the right). In the center is drummer Louis Delorme, who would come and go whenever the song needs him.
Unlike projections, which can be distracting with the shadows, the large background and side (and top?) videos looks amazing. Often specifically program to each song personally. The overall effects, at least from my seat, is that it is like watching the band live on a very large ultra-wide video screen. It looks absolutely amazing.
