Hotline TNT’s show at the Underground Music Venue on Sunday night felt like a high-volume homecoming party, if one that happened to share space with a nationally televised Vikings game. As two large TVs at the back of the room silently streamed Sunday Night Football, frontman Will Anderson put on his former-Minneapolis-substitute teacher voice: “if you can come up closer, I think we’ll all have more fun”. But, Mr. Anderson, the football game? “I will keep you updated.” He did, even shouting mid-song, “do not look at the TV right now!”
Anderson’s local ties gave the night a personal edge. Though he now calls New York home, he repeatedly called out family in the room and even introduced the band as being “from Minneapolis”. That winking contrast mirrors the band’s music itself: intricate guitar lines spiraling into sudden bursts of distortion, tender melodies drowned out by crashing waves of noise, and rhythms that twist and re-form without warning. At 110 decibels, the sound was punishing but precise, with a ringing clarity that rewarded those who brought earplugs.
Earlier in the evening, the crowd was treated to two strong openers: Linus weaved rich textures and dynamic shifts into hard-charging soundscapes, while Combat Naps leaned into witty hooks and heartfelt vocals.
Hotline TNT’s decision to pull their catalog from Spotify two weeks ago – a move made with their label’s blessing – added an extra sense of urgency to the calls to “check out merch”. By the time Anderson and company ducked offstage (no green room!), only to return seconds later for an encore, the room felt fully theirs, the lack of Vikings touchdowns forgotten.
Hotline TNT’s Raspberry Moon is out now on Third Man. Hotline TNT and Combat Naps continue on to Denver’s Larimer Lounge on Tuesday September 16.
