Veteran Orlando, FL metal band Trivium and Jinjer are out together on the “Ascend Above the Ashes” North American tour, with UK band Heriot as support, celebrating Trivium’s Ascendancy album’s 20th anniversary while also promoting Jinjer’s newest album, Duel.
The hard rocking package made a Midtown Kansas City stop at the Uptown Theater, just before the end of this current run of dates. The Grammy-nominated prof metalcore band formed way back in 1999, and is still anchored by the trio of its longtime core members- vocalist and guitarist Matt Heafy; guitarist Corey joined on this most recent tour, by new drummer, Alex Rüdinger.
The band has ten full-length albums under their belt and four EPs, including their newest, Struck Dead, which Roadrunner released on Halloween and featuring singles, “Bury Me With my Screams”; “Six Walls Surround Me”, and the title track, two of the three we got to hear live during their hard-hitting set.
The crowd seemed on their side from the beginning as the band emerged to take their places during the taped intro track and then kicking the set off with a fierce growl and the title track from 2011’s ‘In Waves’ album. Heafy took a second to catch his breath and say hello before returning to the rocking of 2008’s “Into the Mouth of Hell We March.”
“Until the World Goes Cold” turn into a crowd sing-along and Heafy and band mostly let their music doing the talking for the rest of the set, knowing the fans were anticipating hearing the newer songs, as well as the older ones, particularly those from 2005’s Ascendancy record, the first featuring studio work from Beaulieu; and Gregoletto,
Crowd chants and fists in the air marked the new EP’s title track (always a good sign that fans are embracing the new stuff) and the pace lightened only slightly for the more melodic riffs of 2017’s “The Heart From Your Hate” with the drummer’’s beats and the exceptional lights driving the rhythms of “Down From the Sky”.
The set and the evening ended on one last chance to jump and release any remaining energy during 2017’s “The Sin and the Sentence,” the title track of the band’s eighth album with Heafy singing the final line, “The flames grip your throat,” as things came to end, but it was mission accomplished for Trivium- faces melted, heads banged, and a “we came, we saw, we conquered” kind of performance that will ring in fans’ ears until their next time through.
