Ask any skater, and they’ll tell you that Kona Skatepark, in Jacksonville, is the world’s oldest surviving skatepark in the world. It’s world famous, and people from all over the country have visited the skatepark, including Pro Skater Tony Hawk, who used Kona as a location in his video game in 2002.
It’s our first time visiting, and right away, the skatepark is impressive with its 9 acres. There were plenty of options for skaters – from hilly ‘waves’, to the snake, to the swimming pool, to the half-pipes… and new area to simulate an urban environment for skaters to do tricks and skate around the obstacles.
We talked to skaters from across the country – Georgia, a truck driver passing through, family from Orlando, etc. Surprisingly skaters spans all ages, from the very young (5 year olds? – I’m terrible with guessing ages) to the young to the old (but young at heart).
There is also a skateboard store and there is also a music stage… which we were told has the capacity of 300 people. The last band that we mentioned played at Kona was Agent Orange.
