On a blisteringly hot day in the Twin Cities, it was a wonderful balm to slip into the Turf Club in Saint Paul for an evening of indie rock with a bit of bite as Toronto’s Weird Nightmare came to town.
Getting things started was Agnes Uncaged, a local Twin Cities indie garage rock band that we’ve already caught several times here in 2026. Centered by the Eubanks sisters, with Julia on vocals and guitar and Esmé on bass, the band’s songs hint at a wide range of influences across the alt rock scene. They’ve been busy with the release of 2026’s Cyanotype, and the quartet (the Eubanks, alongside Jack Malone on drums and Seth Duin on guitar) went straight in on paper doll, with a hefty bit of reverb and a good closing guitar solo. We had a “stripped down version” of capricorn, as Julia’s guitar went out with a faulty cable connection. Plugged back in, Roquentin was fabulous and continues to be one of my favorites from the band, as those quieter solo guitar verses are brilliantly contrasted with the full bore of the band on the chorus. Esmé appeared to be nursing a knee injury, but soldiered through effectively. Agnes Uncaged had some good crunch in the driving middle set songs, and Malone was excellent in his drum work, holding things down and making transitions between songs super smooth. Some great guitar work with lead solo sliding from Duin over to Eubanks was pretty fun. Eubanks had another great solo on the end of grey eyes and we got a bit of thanks and a “it’s weird it’s still light outside”, as the band headed into the final two songs. We had a great bass riff intro and Agnes Uncaged closed on their noisiest rock number in NKTB, and continues to be a must-see band.

Weird Nightmare is the project of Alex Edkins, vocalist and guitarist known for being part of the Canadian punk / noise rock band METZ. With that band on indefinite hiatus, Edkins has pushed back into this solo project that had a pretty brilliant self-titled debut album in 2022. With a brand new album Hoopla, released here in May 2026, Weird Nightmare is on the supporting tour. Appearing as a quartet (vocals/guitar, guitar, bass, and drums), the band opened on the first track of the new album, the delightful Headful of Rain. The sound was darn near pummeling and Edkins was all thrust on vocals and guitar. Lusitania was off the debut album and was scorching. Things were flying and a crushing intro on Pay No Mind was enthralling. The supporting band was great, but Edkins was the central figure and it was hard to take eyes off of him. Think You Know had a bit of 60’s retro feel bundled with that heavy noise rock pace. I’m not sure I’m doing justice to the intensity and feeling of velocity that was at play here. Edkins simply suffused the venue with a full-throttled passion. Might See You There was a brief, 70’s infused number and as they rolled towards the end, Forever Elsewhere was another tremendous banger. Weird Nigttmare had cornered a strange corner of noisy indie rock and was a sight to behold. Off stage for a moment, the band was back for the encore and absolutely killing it with modulated guitar and a fully drenched vocal hit. Weird Nightmare closed out on a big sound with Little Strange and the band merits watching to see what comes next.
