Hjálmar
First of all, W♥M will be officially working with Duran Duran[W♥M] . This is awesome, you know we love them!
I also wanted to welcome Ceji to the team. If you’re interested in becoming a member of W♥M, please write to me and I’ll set you up. I’m currently looking for people who are opened to all sort of music (especially music outside of the US).
With that said, Hjálmar are from Reykjavík, Iceland. They have a new album Ferðasót (2007), which in English means “Transportable”, according to TranExp. This band came courtesy of Musings On Ice, who’s studying abroad in Iceland.
So the first thing I think about when I started listening to their latest album, is how reggae some of the background beats were. And sure enough, checking out their myspace, they lists themselves as “Reggae/Folk/Blues”.
Since I don’t read Icelandic, I really can’t tell you much about this band. I tried looking around on google and it seems “Hjálmar” is a semi-common name for a boy. I suspect they might have been named after Hjálmar Jónsson, an Icelandic poet.
The album is a nice and mellow, the loudest song is probably “Vagga Vagga” which means “Cradle, Cradle”. And it’s not really that loud either, just a little faster-paced than the other songs.
My two favorite songs are called “Úr varabálki” (this song flows very well) and “Hafið” (this song sounds very familar to me). I’m including “Hafið” for you to check out. Edit: Hafið means “the Sea” in English.
So before you know it, the album ease itself to an end with an instrumental track called “Sálmur Boeves”.
Again, thanks to Musings On Ice for recommending this band.
