Spectrals is 21 year old Louis Jones from northern England (Heckmondwike). Last night, sandwiched in between opening rock band Mrs. Magician and new indie pop sensation Cults, he and his backing band brought their affable brand of 60s garage-infused songs for the first time to the Twin Cities. Their set was mostly comprised of short and punchy songs from his debut album Bad Penny released in 2011 on Slumberland Records.

Jones made his mission clear from the start: to drink and make friends, a declaration he made before kicking into Get Your Magic Out Of My House. The band mirrored his enthusiasm, especially the bass player (actor Kurt Fuller’s doppelganger – seriously wiki this) who wielded his bass like a rifle and grooving intensely with the rhythm. The music itself kept audience members moving, channeling Nick Lowe but with a surf rock flavor and hearkened a bit to modern rockers, the Walkmen.

At the tender age of 21, Jones exudes the kind of songwriting maturity and stage presence of musicians twice his age. With their feel-good tunes and infectious live performance, one can only see great things in store for the Spectrals in the future. Cheers!
