Opening up the show was Brooklyn duo Secret Weapons. According to lore, they had put their song “Something New” on Spotify and the song caught the attention of Epic Records Chairman & C.E.O., LA Reid… The Secret Weapons duo (Gerry Lange and Dan Rocco) signed with the label.
For the live shows, the duo is joined on stage by a drummer and keyboardist (not introduced).
Since there are literally no song titles for reference, I can only tell you they played “Something New” as the penultimate song.
We’re pretty lucky to have caught them very early in their career, so it should be fun and interesting to see where Secret Weapons will go from here.
Next up was Skylar Grey, who previously signed with Linkin Park’s Machine Shop Recordings under the name Holly Brook. Brook left that name behind, reinvented herself as Skylar Grey, and went on to co-writing Eminem and Rihanna’s hit single “Love the Way You Lie”, as well as Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go”, Nicki Minaj’s “Bed of Lies” … an impressive string of hits.
Starting a new chapter in her life, Grey confirmed it with her new single “Moving Mountains”, which was inspired by her new home and view in the state of Utah. The single is taken from a forthcoming new album, the follow-up to her 2013 record Don’t Look Down.
Listening to her live set, she demonstrated that not only is she a good singer, but she can also do good raps (particularly in “Kill For You”), and you can easily see why Dr. Dre decided to recorded her song “I Need a Doctor”.
Grey closed out her 45-min set with “Cannonball”, which was a collaboration song with X Ambassadors, taken from the forthcoming album.
We’ve been following Atlas Genius since their second appearance with Imagine Dragons at Varsity Theater (08 Mar 2013) – they previously appeared with Silversun Pickups in 2012 at the State Theatre. The brothers would return in the same year, as a special appearance at Aloft Hotel (02 June 2013), and also as headliner to the sold out show at Fine Line Music Café (04 Jun 2013), which Jaime wrote, “Lead signer Keith Jeffrey is as unexpectedly engaging as their hit “Trojans”; the number of fans is certain to grow. “I love you Keith!” was yelled not once, but twice before we were four songs in–it’s only a matter of time before the professions of love from the audience turn to marriage proposals.” If three times in Minneapolis weren’t enough, the brothers would return a fourth time at the Varsity Theater (26 Sep 2013). Let’s just say that 2013 was a very active year for the Australian group.
They’ve been gone for two years, but the group came with new record Inanimate Objects (which we heard when they appeared at Chipotle Cultivate Music Festival (22 Aug 2015)… but last Sunday’s Fine Line Music Café’s show was a proper show for their sophomore album.
As you can see from their setlist, the band originally was going to cover hot new band The Weeknd’s “The Hills”, but perhaps a last minute change, they decided to go all 80’s with Dead or Alive’s hit song “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”. Personally speaking, I liked their rock-out version of the song.
Other oddities on their set was “Back Seat”, which singer Keith Jeffery joked, “from our first EP, all the way back in 2012 … when we were known as The Bee Gees.”
Also worth noting (as mentioned in the podcast), is that the third brother Steven Jeffery re-joined Atlas Genius for this tour (appearing on stage with a laptop, possibly doing additional digital sounds). The live band also featured a bassist/keys Kevin McPherson and additional guitarist/keys Matt Fazzi.
It was good to see Atlas Genius back in Minneapolis again, it’s been too long.
