Nine Pound Shadow

Special guests Nine Pound Shadow came on stage to a very receptive crowded. The band is actually two brothers,
Brendain and Christopher Langlois, but when they perform live, they’re joined by Alex on drums and Nate on bass.



After ‘Bridges’ was played, Brendain told this funny story. Apparently, the band also drove from Kansas City earlier in the day and got to the Triple Rock rather late. Rushing to the door, Brendain ran into a big guy. Thinking that he was the doorman, Brendain explained that they were supposed to be there for their soundcheck. The big guy knew who they were and directed the band to the right entrance. From my understand from the story, as it turned out the big guy was just a fan.



Brendain and Christopher traded vocals, and in the middle of their set, switch instruments and stage position. It was clear to me that, depending on whoever was singing, that the two collaborated on writing their shy & intimate songs.



With only a self-titled EP (out now on Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records), the band played everything they’ve recorded, including their single ‘Melody’ (the music video was described as Christopher that they were playing male prostitutes, which were unlike them based on their lyrics) and mixing in some new and work in progress, such as ‘Summer Days’, which ended their 45-min set.



Earlier in the day, Electric Guest took the stage at the Alamo Drafthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, for a 6am appearance on 96.5 The Buzz’s “Kegs & Eggs” radio program. If the band was tired, it was understandable. The turnout was so good that singer Asa Taccone had to let out a “daaaamn” at the large crowd. Fans showed up, thanks to the fact that Electric Guest has been absent from Minnesota since their appearance with BNLX and Crisis Line on 21 July 2012.



The Los Angeles-based band is actually a duo with Taccone as singer and Matthew Compton (aka “Cornbread”), but when they tour, they’re joined by brothers Todd and Tory Dahlhoff on bass and keys, respectively.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, they played a good mixture of their two album releases, Mondo and Plural… the latter was recently released in February 2017, via Across the Universe / Downtown Records.



Electric Guest kicked off their hour long set with ‘Waves’. As previously mentioned, they have been driving the entire day with literally no breaks, so Taccone looked somewhat worn. He wore a cap, and seemed annoyed at the spotlight on him. After the first song, Taccone simply asked the venue to lower or turn off the lights – resulting in a very low lit stage for the remainder of the show. The fans didn’t seem to mind it, and just danced to songs like ‘My Omen’ and ‘See the Light’.
