New York Americana/Roots Animal Years headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last Tuesday, June 5th.
Opening the show were local band The Federales (not to be confused with Portland’s Federale). The rather large group (featuring James, Mark, Ben, Jay, Andy, and Karl) self-described themselves as “classic country for the modern world.”
One thing is for sure, the band members seemed like they’re all old friends… just hanging out and jamming and having a good time. They traded vocals, playing songs from their debut album Blues, Bourbon & Burritos, including their single “Guitars and Grain Belt”.
Animal Years (guitars/vocals Mike McFadden, drummer Anthony Spinnato, bassist Anthony Saladino, with additional unnamed touring guitarist) headlined the show. They normally have their custom “A” and “Y” giant lit letters on each side of the drums, but unfortunately, the tiny 7th Street Entry stage forced the band to improvised with “A” and “Y” right behind the keys.
The Brooklyn band is relatively new to the music scene, naming themselves after Josh Ritter’s 2011 album, and releasing a debut album called Sun Will Rise in 2014. By the end of 2017, the group had already made their way on Rolling Stone’s top 10 new Americana artists to watch and even appeared on CBS This Morning Saturday Sessions!
Singer Mike McFadden mentioned that they were really excited to play Minneapolis for the first time. This was the band’s first national tour, promoting their new EP called Far From Home, available now via Entertainment One (eOne).
Looking over their setlist, they’re basically their debut record, combined with the new songs from Far From Home (including the new single “Friends”).
As we already mentioned in our last podcast, who knows where Animal Years could land in the coming animal years. Our favorite success story was that fellow contemporary Americana band The Lumineers started playing at the 250-capacity 7th Street, but graduated to an 19,000-capacity venue of the Target Center within a few years. We’re hoping the same story for Animal Years, as their upbeat/toe-tapping songs lend itself to a large audience. When they do explode… we can say how lucky we were to have caught the band at a small, intimate venue.
