R.I.P. Maria Mendiola (Baccara)
BBC reported that María Mendiola, of the Spanish duo Baccara, has died at the age of 69… as reported by her family.
If you grew up in the late 70s, the duo’s debut disco anthem, “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie” was massive! It was the #1 song across Europe and became the best-selling single of all time by a female group. Over 18 million copies sold worldwide. This song, and their follow-up, “Sorry, I’m a Lady”, launched the girls to becoming the face of Luxembourg for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978.
Goldfrapp covered the Boogie song, titled “Yes Sir” on their Black Cherry album, while Sophie Ellis-Bextor covered it for I Won’t Change You single, and The Fratellis released their cover as a charity single (after their live performance of the song onChris Evans went viral) … so clearly the song has left a mark on future generations.
After “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie” was adopted as Scotland’s unofficial anthem at the Euro 2020 football tournament, it gave a new lease on life for Baccara.
Mendiola couldn’t believe it, and said, “I never thought I’d be in the charts again. I am not young any more but I guess it shows I can still boogie.”
