Rebel Queens at Turf Club (November 22, 2024)
Rebel Queens Setlist
|
Minneapolis based Rebel Queens is a throw back while also carrying the torch of hard rock & roll. An all women band playing that style of rock makes an easy comparison to The Runaways, and founder and vocalist Tiffany Xtine cites it as a strong part of the inspiration for the group. And they lean into that 70’s era feel, with a microphone stand that is mocked up as a motorcycle (used effectively in one late song), the clothing choices, and even some extra sound effects (a bullhorn made an appearance). There’s a ton of fun and energy from the band and they know the on stage moves (band movements in unison, two members dropping to their knees opposite each other, etc). They have also been busy performing, and this was their second time at Turf Club this year.
But none of this would work if there isn’t the skill and musicianship in the music. Let me be clear on one thing: the skills are absolutely there. Xtine’s vocals are perfect, and seen right out of the gate with the song Every Night is Ladies’ Night. The foundational piece is the duo guitarists, who create those riffs and sounds you would expect, with some excellent extended solos. Solid bass and drums round out this five-member team and it was a delight to listen to the well-organized set. It’s pretty impressive that they could play an excellent cover of Deep Purple’s Highway Star and seamlessly move into one of their originals, Ride on Thru for the close of the set.
Rebel Queens’ next appearance is tonight at the Pumpkin Spice Fall Ball & Flannel Party at The Dog House in Maplewood, Minnesota, follow by Big Turn Music Fest, in Red Wing, playing along with Dessa, UltraBomb, Jeremy Messersmith, Tyreek McDole, Reiki, Willows, Mark Mallman, and others.
