NOTE: Since I have relocated to Jacksonville, I am scaling back on Minneapolis Show Previews for June and beyond. Before, I would spotlight about 90 shows in one month, but now it’ll likely be just 10 or so.

If you have an upcoming Minneapolis (or Jacksonville) show that you’d like me to take a look at and spotlight, please email me vu@weheartmusic.com with the subject Minneapolis or Jacksonville, and I will be sure to add your show to my listing.

Peelander-Z
at Turf Club

first-avenue.com

Our favorite Japanese Peelander-Z band is back on tour, stopping by the Turf Club, in St Paul, on June 3rd. They have a new guitarist, which we are calling Peelander-Leopard.

We last saw the band play at a Noodle shop in Sep 2024 and wrote, “Peelander-Z’s set time was advertised as 3pm, but the reality is that they didn’t even do soundcheck until 4pm. After testing out the mics and audio, Yellow’s running gag is “Bye, bye! Thank you for coming” and leaves, as if their whole show was only 5 minutes. We’ve seen it done before, it’s always funny. The show didn’t actually start until 4:25pm, and by this time, some fans had to leave due to other commitments. We’ve seen Peelander-Z numerous times (eight times by my count), so we know what we’re talking about when we say this is one of the best live bands.”

Samia
with Raffaella
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

Minneapolis-based singer and songwriter Samia is playing a hometown gig at First Avenue on June 6, in support of her third album Bloodless (Grand Jury).

There is a strict 6 ticket limit. Any attempt to exceed the ticket limit of 6 per customer or household, or to game the system in any way, will result in cancellation of orders without notice. There is a transfer delay for all tickets up to ONE MONTH prior to show.

We last saw the band in Feb 2023 and wrote, “…the band did the right thing and changed their name to Preoccupations, stating “Samia took no time engaging the crowd as she led off with “Kill Her Freak Out” from her sophomore album, Honey. The audience responded a standing ovation of screams and howls to other decisions gone wrong like “Triptych.” But it wasn’t all a downward spiral. There was the lively and danceable “Sea Lions.” There was the required “Minnesota” from her debut album The Baby. Also, the producer of her latest album, Caleb Wright, joined her on the stage to sing along with “Honey,” a song they co-wrote together. “I’m all out of sorts,” gushed Samia after the song. For a singer known for her sad songs, it was not hard to detect that she was having a good time as she shared the love by inviting Papa Mbye to sing “Mad at Me” then Tommy LeFroy with “Dream Song” and finally “Shaking the Can” with Raffaella. ”

Raffaella to open. We last saw the singer in Sep 2024 and noted, “It’s nice to see Raffaella with new songs and new look. I first saw her in Sep 2019, and it’s a nice-and-day difference. It was her first time in Minneapolis: “New York’s Raffaella (with live backing band bassist Charlie and drummer Alonso) opened up the show with a very brief 30-min set. This was the singer/songwriter’s first time in Minneapolis, and she started her set with her first single, “Bruce Willis” (which she jokingly called it “yippee ki-yay motherf***er”). Although she’s still very new to the music scene (with only one EP called Ballerina released in August 2019 via Mom+Pop), you can tell that she’s been performing for a while now. It probably won’t be long until she’s back in town, and with a strong audience support, given that she’s won over quite a few fans in the audience.””
