Together (2025)

Halloween is at the end of month, so here are some horror films you might want to check out.

Together is a weird body-horror film, written and directed by Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks. It’s about a couple (played by real-life married actors Dave Franco and Alison Brie) that moved in the countryside and stumbled into a cult or supernatural force that wants to merge them together.

The body horror doesn’t really start until much later in the film, but you’re given clues about what’s happening, for example grotesque animals and the couple uncontrollable movements and attraction to each other. It’s a slow burn, but once the third act kicks in, it’s pretty good.

Fans of The Substance would like Together.

Was really surprise to see actor who played Dewey Crowe from Justified in this film. He’s not really recognizable (and certainly doesn’t act as dumb as the Justified character). I didn’t even know it was him, until looking up the credits for this writeup.

Alison Brie is lovely as ever in this film. I’ve been in love with her since Community, where she plays a nerdy, timid, mild-manner girl. It’s such a departure for her to play a responsible school teacher.

The remake of the 1984 film The Toxic Avenger actually came out in 2023, but for whatever reasons, it didn’t get a theatrical release until this year, 2025.

This is the first real big-budget film for the comedy/horror film for the Troma hero, starring Games of Throne star Peter Dinklage. I’m not sure if he’s right for the role, as I’ve always felt Toxie needed to be a nerdy loser who was bullied into toxic waste that turned him into the Avenger.

With the modern age, Dinklage is a father and the bad guy is Kevin Bacon and his henchmen… which is an evil band called the Killer Nuts or something. Despite having a big budget with real movie stars… it can’t really save film. It’s somewhat boring and the jokes didn’t really land with me… All the film could really use are more gruesome deaths.
