More than fifty years on, Kansas City doesn’t stop believin’!

Now out on their last official outing- the 2026 Final Frontier Tour, legendary Bay Area band Journey filled the T-Mobile Center downtown for a farewell two-hour+ show of hits, nods to the past, and oh, those memorable melodies and choruses. KC faithfully embraced the band with open arms one last time, before the members go their separate ways.

This was a fond farewell, needing no opening act or additional fanfare, as the lights went dark and the opening notes of “Be Good to Yourself” began a set than featured more than two dozen selections from their five decade-plus career as a band.

The set design itself featured a three-screen set up with the center being the largest, all framed by vari-lites and a sprocket/snowflake shaped large light rig above the band. The radio station motif (from 1986’s Raised on Radio album and tour) illuminated behind the band, making sense that the Billboard Top 10 song that opened the evening, was both a greeting and perfect set intro.

The song choices themselves were more of a career-spanning narrative (and dare we say, an evolution) versus a normal concert; of course, which included the large handful of mega-hits expected to be heard at every show, plus a few deep cuts (though nothing from their early jazz/fusion days [as expected], nor 2022’s ‘Freedom’ album [somewhat surprisingly]).

Despite some family issues, the pride of the Philippines, Arnel Pineda returned one last time for the tour as frontman, a position he’s held for the last nineteen years. Pineda has had some previous vocal issues (like lauded singer Steve Perry, as well as everyone who’s come after him [Augeri, Soto]) but allowing other members to sing (who knew the band had so many high tenors?) and his better ability to control his voice, led to numerous impressive times he could reach and hold a high note, all while still running and jumping about the stage.

Of course, guitarist Neal Schon (who has been playing since basically out of the womb) remains the musical engine of the band. As co-founder, he’s been the chief architect for the band’s sound through the decades, still flashing that priceless smile as he effortlessly extended solos and jams with finesse, musical muscle, and grace.

Longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain took the lead for a majestic solo and updated his 1983-penned hit, “Faithfully” to be dedicated for America’s men and women in uniform, on this, the 250^th anniversary year of our Declaration of Independence.

Drummer Deen Castronovo proved his own versatility, pulling off lead vocals on the earlier classics, “Lights” and “Where Were You” and second keyboardist, Jason Derlatka took the vocal helm for another ‘Raised on Radio’ charting hit, “I’ll Be Alright Without You” [which authentically included the ‘someday baby, maybe your heart will be mine’ lyric Perry added when singing it live.)

To reward the veteran fans, deeper cuts like 1981’s “Escape”, 1983’s “Edge of the Blade”, and 1978’s “La Do Da” seemed fresh additions and were welcome reminders that the band was much more than, and not going out, on a jukebox setlist of only hits.

While we never expected images of volcanoes and a multitude of pyro during “Wheel in the Sky,” it was touches like that, that make sure the audience remained engaged, even during those songs they didn’t know every word to- but the crowd needed no extra encouragement and remained interactive- singing and dancing along to almost every song.

After just over two hours (with no encore), the beginning piano notes of “Don’t Stop Believin’” raised phones, prompted loud cheers, and had voices already singing before the first lyric, the true proof of the band’s musical impact and legacy.

As Pineda let the audience sing the choruses as the members smiled and played along, this is true moment the show had been leading up to- a connection between Journey and their fans, in celebration of all the music and related nostalgic and wonderful times together with the band as the soundtrack. And that’s an ideal send-off.
