Zella Day, w/ Lany at 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (29 July 2015)

Zella Day, w/ Lany at 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (29 July 2015) Last night was not a show I would typically go to. I had never heard of either of the acts playing. I had no expectations and honestly, I kind of wanted to stay home and just soak in some more aloe (my sunburn from Warped Tour on Sunday is still ridiculously painful).

Widowspeak at Georgia Theatre Rooftop, Athens (18 July 2015)

Widowspeak is a Brooklyn,NY-based band formed in 2010 by Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas. The duo play dreamy, western-tinged shoegaze rock, taking influence from 1950s pop ballads and 1970s psychedelia. Molly has a lovely, lilting voice, ever so slightly raspy, with a breathiness that can lull the listener into a pleasant waking dream. Widowspeak has often been compared to Mazzy Star, and their sound is also somewhat reminiscent of The Cowboy Junkies, who had a 1988 hit with a cover of The Velvet Underground’s Sweet Jane. However, I have a feeling that Widowspeak will stand the test of time a lot better than either of those two acts.

AthFest 2015

AthFest is a well-oiled machine, and they run a tight ship. The 19th annual installment of this festival- which ran from Friday June 26 through Sunday June 28, 2015 in Athens, GA- was no exception. I was impressed at how the bookers, organizers and- most of all- the stage crews were able to stagger the bands just so; there was no overlap between any bands on the outdoor stages and therefore no cacophony. None of the Club Crawl bands started playing until after the last outdoor acts for each evening had ended their sets, so we festivalgoers at AthFest 2015 were able to take in music well into the night.

Tori Amos at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles (23 Jul 2014)

As I walk the mile from my house to the Greek Theatre, adorned in a flowing floral skirt matched with super-comfy combat boots, I marvel at the eclectic crowd heading to tonight’s show. There are people of all ages, young and old, hip, not so hip, couples, goth stars, artsy 90’s wave kids (which is the category I presumably fall into), industry savvy professionals, and massive amounts of nerds...but you know, like the cool, unassuming nerds. Amongst the sea of people I feel a sense of calm come over me, because not only am I bathing in the twilight as I slowly wander up the hill into the magic that is Griffith Park, but I feel a sense of oneness that I don’t always get at shows. Tonight we aren’t coming together to merely see an artist or a musician, no...we are coming together to experience a revolution, to capture that feeling of nostalgia that we all turn to music to fulfill, that meditative state that only certain songs are able to give us. For me, and it looks like for a lot of other people as well, one of those magnificent guru’s in the world of which we call music, is the fiery redhead Tori Amos.

Incan Abraham Album Release Show, The Bootleg LA 4/2

Incan Abraham graced the stage of the Bootleg Theatre in LA on Tuesday night in celebration of their new album Tolerance. Along with Black Apples and Vanaprasta, I was stoked to be apart of this special evening for them, as I’ve been following the band for three years now. I’ve only seen them in their native LA setting, however the guys have been busy touring in 30 states for the past few months. Seeing Incan Abraham is not just seeing live music, it’s a psychedelic experience, it has a beating heart and a definitive aura that you don’t always get at rock shows. These guys are pure magic from the inside out.
