The Chelsea Wolfe and Wovenhand co-headlining tour just came through town at the Triple Rock Social Club on August 31st. The show was sold out.

Apology for lack of photos, apparently I’ve dropped my camera one too many times and the lens no longer extends or detracts. I will try and describe everything to the best of my faulty memories.

First band on the stage was Wovenhand (sometime known as “Woven Hand”), the band lead by former 16 Horsepower singer David Eugene Edwards, with nearly an hour-long set. Even if you didn’t know he was formerly in another band for 13 years, by the way he carried himself on stage, this wasn’t his first rodeo. I felt that he was just used to headlining shows.

The stage setup had a Native American vibe, with the red ‘handwoven’ rug and hanging bandanas (or little flags?). Even during his set, Edwards spoke in (what I’m assuming) either Navajo and Cherokee… whatever it was, it sure didn’t sound English. Sometime he would do a bow & arrow hand gestures, indicating that some of these songs are about a great hunter. Other times, it sounded religious with sample lyrics like “The angel of the Lord stood by/Master say on/Who is this who comes from Edon”.

If I’m keeping track of this right, I believe this is Chelsea Wolfe‘s first headlining show since her appearance at the Cedar in 2013 (in 2014, she opened up for Queens of the Stone Age and Eels… the latter made national headline news because of Steve Perry in his first appearance since his 19-year absence from the stage).

In typical Wolfe entrance, the entire room was in darkness and one by one the band marched on stage. I’ve never actually been close to the stage for one of Wolfe’s show, so this was the first time that I noticed that there is a distinct smell of incense. Wolfe, in a long black dress with one exposed sleeveless arm and an oddly large patch at the bottom of her dress, started into a banshee-like chorus of “Carrion Flowers”.

The crowd was in complete quiet mode, which is really unheard of for a sold out show. I suspect everyone who was there, they wanted to watch and hear the show. One of the most respectful audience I’ve been to in a while.

As I have previously mentioned in the past, her stage presence is amazing. She’s dark and moody and takes herself very seriously. Her music has a little of everything, from gothic rock to industrial to metal. The best part is when she’s taking a little time to tune her guitar (everyone knows the drill and just play background drone-ish sounds)…. leaving her entire set with little or no breaks.

Chelsea Wolfe’s latest Abyss is out now on Sargent House.
