….

New York’s singer-songwriter-bassist Karina Rykman’s first Minneapolis show took place at the 7th Street Entry on a very cold Wednesday night. Joining her on stage was Adam November on guitars and Chris Corsico on drums. Despite the weather, turnout to this show was incredibly good for a school’s night.

We first saw Rykman, unintentionally, as part of Marco Benevento’s band, in 17 Mar 2023. We didn’t know who she was, but with her happiness and great bass work, she certainly left us a good impression. We noted, “… bassist Karina Rykman (who replaced original bassist Dave Dreiwitz when he joined Ween) is all smiles, doing her head-banging on the bass.”

And speaking of Ween, there were plenty of Ween fans in the audience… as well as Butthole Surfer and Phish fans… of these bands Rykman have covered in her live shows.

Like her previous appearance, she is certainly all-smiles and laughter throughout the set. In fact, Rykman mention what an honor it was to play at the historic First Avenue venue (the 7th Street Entry is within the same building). She took a photo of her famous smile in front the venue.

I’ll have to admit, it’s weird to hear her sing, as most of the songs I’m used to seeing her play are more instrumental (and heavy on the bass). She did play her single “Joyride” early in the set… and after another song, a surprise cover of Wet Leg’s “Chaise Longue”. Best moment in that song was waiting for the audience to sing back, “What?”

Opening the show was Austin’s Cloudchord (previously known as D.V.S). He played an hour-long set of funky disco-ey songs with his guitar and his midi beat pad. It’s kind of impressive what he can accomplish as a one-man band.

He seems to have an eclectic tastes in music, like Grateful Dead to Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” (“for the ladies…”) to Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day”. I know it’s inappropriate, but I would’ve liked to see the white dude rapping this song… but instead he held up lyric sheets.
