    Mando Diao

I went to see Mando Diao, but I ended up in love with Liverpool’s Pop Levi instead. He dances around like a robot and his live show is much better than what they’ve recorded in the studio.

In 2007, I went to see Sweden’s alternative rock band Mando Diao play at the 400 Bar. The band had a big breakthrough with their second album Hurricane Bar in 2004, which they toured and stopped by the Triple Rock Social Club in 2005.

For their fourth studio album, Never Seen the Light of Day, the band was determined to take the world by storm with a long exhaustive world tour… stopping by the 400 Bar, in Minneapolis, on May 8, 2007.

The new album was a different direction for the band, as frontman Björn Dixgård said that they were tired of the big recording studios and decided to go smaller and independent studios. The title (Never Seen the Light of Day) was a reflection of how they felt about the music, as they didn’t think the record would be released at all.

Despite the album being slower and quieter than their previous releases, as you can see from the photo by Steve, the band was still sweating and giving their all to rock ‘n roll.

For this show, I forgot to bring my camera. A few of my friends were there, and we were very close to the front of the stage. The 400 Bar is actually a pretty small place. The stage is only a foot tall and on the left side of the room is the bar area.

I didn’t mention this in the original review, but the very first opening band was The
    Films
(Michael Trent, Kenneth Harris, Jake Sinclair, and Adam Blake), a band from South Carolina. The band members met in high school and it was probably their first tour, in support of their debut album
    Don’t Dance Rattlesnake
. Later on, in 2009, the band signed to Warner Records and released Oh, Scorpio.

I was smitten by the second opening band, Pop Levi. I didn’t know it then, but he’s from Ladytron (I only found out after the fact), and he had some great songs and dance moves.

As for Mando Diao, they released Boblikov’s Magical World in 2023, but they have not been back to Minneapolis for a while.

    Original report:

I went to see Mando Diao, but I ended up in love with Liverpool’s Pop Levi instead. He dances around like a robot and his live show is much better than what they’ve recorded in the studio.

I was also quite happy to find out that Pop Levi used to be in a band called Super Numeri, and they’ve released records under one of my favorite labels: Ninja Tunes!

If you bought Ladytron’s Softcore Jukebox, he’s one of the artists that they’ve picked to be on the compilation (maybe it helped that he also plays bass for them).

Pop Levi’s band was pretty much non-movement. The drummer was excellent and sweated a lot, but the bassist and rhythm guitarist basically just stood still the whole time. They were a bit funny lookin’. I’ll include a drawing of them because I actually forgot my camera :/ and at least the two of you actually enjoy seeing them.
